“Overpriced, lack of attention and a service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

After reading the previous glorifying reviews we felt we should try the Schloss. Unfortunately I must agree with the poor reviews. On arrival the reception is not staffed, it felt as walking into someones home without asking.Eventually I traced a waited in the kitchen who handed over the keys and showed us to the room. He mentioned there is no staff after 6 as everyone concentrates on running their restaurant next door. I felt generally unwelcome and there was a lack of attention to guests. There was a wedding party the same time so the landlady and staff were mostly worried about them and the restaurant. WOuldnt be there a helpful waitress at breakfast who gave us some tips as to what to see, we would have been l;eft to our our devices. Room standard wasnt great, suggest not to take the standard double bed, its tiny, converted tower cell. The other room ( much more expensive) seemed nicer. Theroom was dirty, had at least dozen od dead flies on our bed and the cleaner comes in for 5 mins to change the towels. Overall for 500 Euro !!!!! ( 3 nights ) I felt the price was extortionate , you might as well go to 4 star in Berlin , Barcelona, Vienna where they know how to run a hotel.Dissapointed.

Room Tip: stay away from the standard room

On our honeymoon we decided to spend some days in Zell Am See and this hotel seemed a great choice, but we left with mixed feelings. The "castle" in itself is beautiful, room was very large and full of charme. Other good point was the breakfast, full of choices. What left us disappointed is the service...The staff runs not only the hotel but also the 2 stars michelin restaurant that is part of the structure, so at 6 pm the hotel is left with no one to manage it and the only option is dinner to this very good but also expensive restaurant (you may afford once) or drive to the city centre which is 3 miles away. So be careful, you need a car, especially if you want to ski. The manager was polite and helped us with ski renting and lessons booking, however it seemed too few people around it. Also no internet connection in the rooms and very slow in the common areas, no lift too. Considering how expensive it is, value for money is pretty low. If you are looking for a place nearby the slopes or vibrant this is not the best option. If you want a romantic and quiet week end it may suit.

We stayed at the Schloss for the best part of a week during a skiing break with the children. We had booked the very spacious 3 bedroom, 2 bedroom floor, which was a little too big for us, but we wanted space and 2 bathrooms. The hospitality and personal warmth extended by the hostess was exemplary; she was gracious and friendly, and went out of her way to make our stay comfortable (by providing me with a kettle, for one, so that I could make endless cups of tea!). The children were delighted by the character of the place and loved the breakfast; they have begged to be taken back during the summer. A few comments, however. Our floor looked a little 'tired'. There is 'character', and then there are worn through sofa coverings, curtains coming off their hooks, and holes in the linen. It was wonderful to have a baby grand piano in the apartment, but my daughter soon gave up trying to play as the piano was completely out of tune. The apartment was asking to be renovated to include a small kitchen; not so profitable for the owners, perhaps, but we were rattling around in the two, large (three, if you include the one with a double bed) reception rooms. Finally, if the kitchen could extend its hours beyond 6 pm, that would be an enormous plus point. In this way a family can have a pleasant but simple meal, rather than being obliged to either dine in the sumptuous restaurant attached to the Schloss , or go out. Nevertheless, I would heartily recommend this place to other families, as its plus points outweigh the critical ones!

We spent only one night at this amazing hotel but were impressed totally. The castle is beautiful, located in a nice park, close to the main road but still tranquil, facing the lake. The interiors are tastefully decorated and the staff is extremely friendly. The rooms are stylish, the bathrooms are exceptionally well designed. High quality materials are everywhere. We also had dinner in the hotel's restaurant "Mayer's" which was an unforgettable experience, the food was excellent, the ambience of the restaurant including the staff is beyond satisfaction. The breakfast was also very good. I cannot say anything bad - except that it was a little bit cold for us in the room during the night, but it was April, hard to follow the changeable weather. And maybe the only problem was that our room was on the 3rd floor and there is no elevator, we coud hardly went upstairs after the long dinner.
I would recommend the place mostly for couples - what more can you ask for a romantic night than a superb dinner, a little walk in the garden and a night in the castle? Every girl will feel like a real princess.

Room Tip: Rooms on the first floor - since there is no elevator. :-)

I stayed here and we had the entire castle to ourselves. The staff, food, drinks, etc... are the best and I have never felt freedom on vacation like I did while I stayed here. This is a definate place to stay if you are in or near Zell am See.

We stayed here for our honeymoon and couldn't have asked for more. We were upgraded to a beautiful room with the best views. The room had lovely wooden beam features and was always warm and cosy. The spa was great after a hard day snowboarding and we had it to ourselves the whole time, which is good as it is only really big enough for one couple. The staff were more than happy to put the spa on if it wasn't already and there was no time limit on using it. The breakfast offered great choice and excellent value as we had booked it when it was included in your stay. I imagine we wouldn't have had it if it wasn't included. As we were there during a big snow storm we were very glad we had a car or we'd have been stranded. There is a bus but the snow had completely covered the pavement so to wait for the bus you had to stand in the middle of the road! The evening restaurant (although amazing for a special treat) is far too pricey to eat at more than once, if that, so you need to be able to get into town to eat. But all-in-all this place is perfect for a retreat away from the ski crowds. Recommended.

Room Tip: One of the mini-suites on the top floor

If you are going to be in the area, you simply must stay here at least for one night! All rooms and public areas are authentically decorated in an ironic luxurious but medieval style, making for a unique and not-to-be-missed experience! Since it was a slow weekend, we were upgraded to the Gerti von Hofannsthal suite (although we booked a double), with 2 truly beautiful bedrooms (with real, American-style king beds!), 2 sitting areas (with daybed and large LCD TV, wifi) and one modern bathroom with huge rain showerhead in shower big enough for 2. Unfortunately, clouds obscured what on other days are spectacular Alpine views. Staff spoke perfect English, were extremely friendly and helpful. Prielau is wonderfully romantic (perfect for anniversaries, weddings, etc)—you will feel like Lord and Lady Prielau for a night!
