“This is an amazing hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2012

I have just returned from a week at this hotel and in my opinion you will be hard pressed to find a better standard of hotel. The hotel has been in the same family for many years and they know how to deliver service. All the staff are so friendly and helpful and the regional food is truly delicious. An amazing spa is available for use après ski or après hike. I thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Our family group of 7 stayed at the Romantik for our first skiing trip to Zell am See. Our preferred choices of hotel were full, so on the strength of good reviews, we chose the 4* Romantik.

The rooms were big enough, but generally of a more basic standard than expected, and not to the level of typical decor usual in a good Austrian hotel. The beds turned out to be very hard, almost painful to sleep on. Also, the rooms were extremely warm, without any heating controls at all in the room. Opening the window was the only way to regulate heat!

The food was just adequate, but unimaginative. A veal escalope, one night, turned out to be Weiner Schnitzel, not quite what was expected from the menu description. The wine list was reasonably extensive, though slightly pricey. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

A afternoon snack was described as being offered, but we found it served only on 5 out of 7 nights, and it was generally unappetising and very quickly finished by hungry children. It wasn't replenished when gone.

Whilst smoking is generally banned in hotels in Austria nowadays, they still permitted smoking in the main bar/lounge area, and the smoke soon permeated up the stairs into the bedroom area.

There is a small wellness area within the hotel, which the children used, and found to be ok.

Overall, the hotel is now old and tired, and, in my opinion, is far from a 4* standard hotel. I have stayed in many Austrian family hotels, from 3* to 5* and would only rate the Romantik at an average 3*.

This was our 2nd trip to Zell but our first to the Romantik.

The location of the hotel is great with everything very close by. A 5 min walk takes you to the ski hire shop where guests at the Romantik can leave their skis and boots, making it very easy. Another 5 mins and you are at the CityXpress ski lift. Couldn't be easier! I believe the hotel offers a shuttle service to another ski lift a little bit further away from the hotel but we had no need to use this service.

The spa facilities were great and on my 3 visits were never over crowded. Didn't experience any treatments but If you are interested , look out for the offers the hotel run.

Breakfast had plenty of choice and we never hit the slopes hungry. Some strange choices on the menu at dinner but don't be put off. The quality of the food was very good and the hotel is happy to mix and match from the menu if you ask. The Austrian buffet night was the clear favourite with great choice and plenty of it.

Zell is a lovely town , not too big , not too small and very easy to get everywhere on foot. Great choice of mountain restaurants but be aware most where very busy between 12 and 1.30 so go before or after for a slightly more relaxing lunch. Crazy Daisy, less than 5 mins from the hotel is great for après ski drinks and lunch with an outside area with views of the lake. The Irish bar seconds from the Hotel is very friendly and smoke free which is very rare.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room with a balcony, great for chilling bottles of water and beer and rooms at t...

We stayed for one night at this hotel in December 2011. The hotel is as you would expect for the money paid, and the other reviews are probably quite correct.
Our only issue was what happened to us in the pool area. Pools by nature are wet and whatever floor you have they can be slippery. Our son slipped and landed on a small table.
Unfortunately the table was made of GLASS and it smashed completely and cut our son's wrist. Luckily it was only a graze but the mind boggles as to how much worse it could have been. The staff were helpful in checking he was ok and clearing up the glass. BUT we were somewhat shocked to find a charge on our bill for replacement of the glass. We commented that it seemed a little unsafe to have glass next to a pool and they said that they had not had any problem before.
We paid the extra amount but felt quite disappointed with the whole situation - it was just an accident after all, our son could have been severely hurt, and whatever they say glass in a pool area can not be a good thing - can it?
Would they have charged if we had dropped a wine glass or dinner plate you have to wonder....
So parents be aware that there are several small tables in the pool area with glass tops!

Such a lovely hotel, and resort. Suitable for all ages and for non skiers too.
From check in at the hotel to departure this family run hotel really lived up to our expectations. We booked a package holiday and then booked a wedding package direct through the hotel (the manager of the hotel is the wedding coordinator and will ensure your wedding day is magical)
The rooms were all lovely, travelling with a large party we all had different room types, all clean, good facilities and had that quaint austrian feel. The hotel does have family rooms, speak to the hotel about upgrading.
Food was lovely, breakfast buffet with plenty to choose from, and then 4 course evening meal, nothing was ever too much trouble with the hotel staff and if anyone wanted something adapting off the evening menu they would try their very best especially for the children.
Spa facilities were excellent, so relaxing and a nice place to chill out after a cold day out in the snow.
Excellent location right in the centre of the resort, the train station is also nearby for a visit to Salburg - make sure you visit this beautiful city whilst you are there! The train takes approx 1hr and a half to salzburg but well worth it.
We had an action packed week with plenty to do for all the family, and our wedding day was perfect.
Will definitly be returning to this hotel very soon!

I was a beach babe that associated holidays with heat - until we visited the Romantik in December due to my sister getting married here - Now I know what all the fuss is about..

The resort itself was literally like a scene from a Christmas card - Plenty of snow and all the shops & houses decorated in lights and decorations - The area is stunning and scenic and the Austrian people were relaxed, warm and friendly. No problems with the language barrier - everyone we spoke to spoke perfect English..(how bad are we?)

The hotel staff were lovely - the atmosphere again was relaxed - very easy going, no airs or graces and you are positively encouraged to just take it easy, lounge around and forget about lifes worries.
Beautifully decorated, the hotel has hidden corners and corridors full of interesting antiques and history pieces hanging on walls, lit up in cabinets and displaying on landings.

The coal fire bar area is really cosy and the spa and pool area a delight to go to before dinner - waterbeds, an indoor pool that leads outside (it isn't cold - you would never catch me swimming outside in the snow normally) different types of saunas and steam rooms,a sunbed, sun loungers, showers etc (I went in the saunas in my swimsuit - nobody around)
Spa music and smells, very warm and free fizzy water and teas down here too - we didn't have a any treatments so can't comment on that part.

The food was a delight to try - chef certainly knows how to cook beef and the strudel buffet was gorgeous.
Breakfast was 0730-1000 (although we were still milling around after this time picking at the cakes and nobody seemed to mind) It was a mixture of either little smoked sausages or bacon on alternate days & scrambled eggs - lovely selection of meats & cheeses, amazing bread rolls, croissants, cakes, cereals, yogurts, fruit etc - A pot of coffee or hot chocolate is brought to the table - this is the time where you tick the box on the menu which is on your table, to select your evening meal -
Evening meal times were from 1930 - 5 courses of loveliness - different each night and the strudel buffet (especially the plum) was delicious - best custard ever! Some of the things on the menu we didn't recognise but everything we tried was nice or better - cream of black salsify soup? No idea - very nice though

They seemed to put a pudding out in the breakfast area around 5pm ish to see you through.
We also had an evening welcome drink on one of the evenings - Mulled wine heated on the open cauldron in the snowy garden - Gluhwein (pronounced gluevine) is everywhere and certainly gets you in the christmas spirit.

The toboganning arranged by reception was a real highlight - (except for the trek to the top of the slope) An amazing run down a winding lit track high up in the hills.

We also took a trip to Salzburg on the train (don't forget your padlock if you're a couple!) It took around an hour 45 mins - cost was 28 euros total for a group of 5 - bargain! Here we did the tourist bus so we knew what was what - you can catch this right outside the train station and there are very helpful tourist info kiosks here too. We had a great mooch around the christmas market.
We also caught a bus to Kaprun (last stop) 8 euros pp return - Here we got 3 cable cars to 3000 meters to the top of Kitzsteinhorn - cost for a round trip for non skiers was 28 euros each.
There is also a great little cable car trip in Zell, towards the back of the hotel - (14 euros each round trip) great views of the lake and we had a lovely hot chocolate in the nice log restaurant up there.
We walked around down by the lake every day but couldn't seem to find a way right round it.
Although we don't ski, it all looked amazing and we would now love to try it.

Towels, small hairdryer, slippers and a bathrobe are provided in the hotel- snow boots a must at this time of year although we didn't feel particularly cold at ground level - the rooms are really warm too - clothes dried out quickly and the ski room looked spacious and warm too.

Thanks so much to the family of the hotel and Sabrina for organising my sisters wedding and giving us a truly wonderful holiday - Also to the man of the house for all your help - We hope to see you again and we will recommend you to all - Keep doing what you do, I know the whole party loved it at your hotel but may not use tripadviser -
So on behalf of us all, Happy New Year and thank you for some great memories!

Room Tip: All rooms are unique in their own right!

On arrival we were greeted by friendly receptionists, there were a few of us as we were with a wedding party. They explained the timings for dinner, the spa facilities, as there were 2 sections, 1 nude and 1 clothed but these were in separate areas and about the hotel and the rest of the facilities.
After checking in the room which was spacious, all very clean and cheerful I went to the bar and had a look around the hotel. It was quaint and felt very homely indeed and it was warm. The hotel has many different rooms, a great wine cellar which they let us have a look at, there is a pool tabel, board games, table tennis table and a nice bar area with a few different areas to eat in. As we were with a wedding party we had our own area for meals which was a lovely touch and made us feel very special.
The staff cannot do enough for you - they need to have a special mention because all of them work very hard and always smile, greet you and will make sure you have a fantastic time whilst staying at the hotel.
The food was AMAZING, 4 courses each night and the quality was superb
Breakfast was a buffet and everything was fresh, great choices.
The wedding couple had the reception in the hotel and from walking the guests up to the registry office and bringing them back and looking after everyone throughout the whole day was superb. Food and service again - AMAZING.
Walter - the one man band was out entertainment for the evening and he likes to involve as many people which was fun and we all had a laugh.
There are so many things to do too and reception will help with anything, they organised mini buses to take us snowmobiling anf tobogganing.
I will look to go back in Summer 2012 and stay at the Romantik again.
Faultless place with superb staff and fantastic food

Room Tip: I had a room in the modern wing but the original part of the hotel would be good too
