Our first impressions, as first impressions usually are, were not as we had thought. This is only a small (3 star) hotel-pension and the following should be considered with this in mind.
Upon walking into the entrance area, we had to make our way to the next floor, this being the location of the reception. We checked in and were shown our room (107) on the first floor above the dinning room. The room itself was clean and tidy, there was enough space, the bathroom was nicely decorated and there was a balcony. The balcony was shared with the next room but it was big enough. Please note that not all rooms have a balcony and we did pay a little for this at time of booking.
Dinner was set aside for us so we decided to go down and eat. On the ground floor is dinning area and it is this room that serves breakfast, dinner and also doubles for a bar area as well, however, there is no dedicated area for sitting (as in the usual format for a bar or pub), and so the bar stools or the dining tables are used instead. We did not use the bar specifically and so cannot comment on the service, however, as beer and wine is FREE during dinner (6-8pm), all you have to ask is what you would like and the waitress brought it over. You can have as many as you like in that time. This was a definite positive.
The food was ok but it could have been better. There was soup, a choice of two mains and dessert, that's it. Meals are chosen on a daily menu, which is left on your table. You select what you would like and following evening the food is served to you. Simple and effective. Now don't get me wrong, it smelt good, was tasty enough (would definitely not go as far as delicious - that is a stretch of the imagination) but it definitely lacked something. Don't expect plenty of, or at least a selection of vegetables. With a meat or fish portion, some potatoes is all you got, with lashings of sauce, too much sauce, which made presentation look somewhat sloppy. The soups were mostly of the clear / watery type and the sweets were fruit, ice cream, strudel etc. And breakfast is continental only: bread rolls, cheese, some processed meat, some salami, preserves, cereal, coffee and juice. You can make your own packed lunch from the breakfast selection at no extra cost. If there are two of you there will 8 bread rolls for breakfast / lunch. Our suggestion is that if you find that a little boring day after day, there are plenty of places to eat in town, which is literally at the bottom of the street.
The staff did speak English and enough to get by so there was no problem there. We tried a little German as well when greeting and / or ordering beers etc.
The rooms were cleaned daily, beds made, fresh towels, bin emptied, windows opened to get some air (windows are doubled glazed with good locks to allow horizontal and vertical opening by twisting handle in different directions) etc. With the windows shut at night it was very quiet. We both slept very well each night.
There was no fridge, no tea or coffee making facility, no iron, no body wash etc. in the bathroom, and bearing in mind this is only a 3 star place, don't expect these to be in the room. There was a tv and remote but we didn't use it. There is parking for two cars that we saw and there was space for two motorbikes as well, both next to the outdoor seating area that opens up from the dining area via a double patio door. There is also a resident dog there (kept to itself, was quiet and spent a lot of time outside) so be warned if you have allergies.
So, for a no-frills stay in a clean, quiet and comfortable hotel / pension at a reasonable price, and if food is not high on you list of priorities, then this is not a bad little place to stay, especially as it is so close to literally everything.
We ended up tipping quite well by the end of the week because the service we received was good and we had no complaints.
