“An OK place in a cute town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2010

My husband and I traded our Los Cabos timeshare for a week here. It is not more than a 3 star hotel (by American standards), but we knew that going in. The first room we were shown was dreadful...just a basic hotel room that you may find at a Holiday Inn. We upgraded to a junior suite which was large with a king bed, sofa grouping, lots of storage . THe rooms were decorated in the '80's and are in need of an updating. The bathroom had plenty of room for 2 sinks, but instead had alot of wasted counter space. The sink was cracked. There is no shower curtain or door...just a half wall that allowed water to splash to the floor. Make sure you ask for a room in the back. We had an end room 140 and it had a nice view of the hills, but the front rooms look at the shopping mall. The Italian restraruant was sub par. Go next door to Cavali's!! We ate there 3 nights in a row. ..lamb chops and creme brulee were to die for. The Lotus is also good...Chinese food in an Austria where the owners speak German...can't beat it! Worse part of htel was the attitude of the front desk staff. They acted with boredom and disinterest and were down right rude, at times. The housekeeping and waitstaff employees were great. Also, no washcloths (not uncommon in some European hotels) and no top sheet on the bed...just a very warm down comforter..way to warm for August!! No a/c, either.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a week on our honeymoon.
It's cute, convenient, and comfortable. The staff was been nice and helpful.
There are a couple restaurants in the hotel that are good, and the neighborhood is bursting with great places to eat and wonderful shopping.
The hotel offers many things: there is a pool and other fitness facilities, we rented bikes through the hotel, and the hotel arranged a car rental for us.
Our room had a wonderful view, but was very no-frills. Comfy bed, TV with 1 English station, but no Air Conditioning!
I don't handle heat well, so was a little uncomfortable during the day, but at night the town cooled down a lot.
Overall, good experience.

Our week's stay at the hotel was excellent. Admittedly the weather was very, very hot and sunny which helps but everything was superb - air con might have been good but hey that kind of heat happens rarely in central Europe. We upgraded to a south facing, two bedroom, two bathroom apartment with small but adequate kitchenette and views over the roof tops to the river and mountains beyond. The rooms were serviced every day and the staff, at all levels, were very curteous and spoke excellent English. The car park below the hotel at €35 for the week was maybe a bit pricey but extremely convenient. The wifi wasn't the best and at €8 for 3 hours was a little annoying but we coped. The pool & gardens were wonderful in the heat.
St Johann was larger than we expected, more a town than an Alpine village but the surrounding area offered so much. Places that must be visited include Salzburg, the Ice Cave (be prepared for a long hard climb and many steps) Untersberg cable car, the Salt Mines, Liechtenstein Gorge, Gross Glockner Glacier, Zell am See and many others within a short drive. Also lovely mountain walks are possible from the hotel.
I highly recommend this area and the hotel.

I have travelled to Austria five times and this is by far the beat hotel I have stayed in. Ski slopes very close at hand as is the town centre.

Just spent a week at the Alpenland Sporthotel. There were 3 of us, my son (9yrs) and my husband and myself. This was our first time skiing in Austria and we were extremely happy with everything. The staff was wonderful and the room was clean and well kept. We had a studio through a time share and there was ample room for all three of us. We could rent our skis and sign up our son for ski school right there at the hotel. You could also buy your lift ticket and then take a shuttle straight to the ski resort. It was nice being dropped off right at the front and not have to lug all your equipment very far. We forgot my son's helmet and the ski instructor, Mark, lent us one for free. There is a beautiful indoor pool and gym that was outfitted well. The hotel is near some excellent restaurants. Go to Mama Mia just down the road. Mexican food to die for. The Chinese place is good as well. If there is anything negative to say about this hotel is that they still allow smoking indoors. But I think that is an Austrian law. Will definitely go back.

We have just returned from this hotel and could not be more pleased. We had a room on the third floor with a view of the mountains. It was lovely and clean. The staff were so friendly and helpful and spoke English which was really handy for us.The pool and surrounds are a terrific facility and I would highly reccommend this place.

Staff not overly friendly but will help with train schedules etc. Rooms small and dark. Ours smelled quite often of raw sewage, reported but not corrected in our two week stay. Hotel very clean but dated and worn out furniture. TV all channels in German except CNN, which played the same loop of news over and over again. Small refrigerator stocked with overpriced drinks. Computers/internet can be used if you pay 1 euro for 10 minutes.

Boycott Wally's bar the bartender is a bigot. He is a surly schmuck!

We had discussed buying a week, if available, at this hotel prior to our stay. I will never spend my time or money in Austria again.

Many places in St Johann im Pnogau do not accept credit cards. I can't believe these merchants expect travelers to carry a lot of cash.

We spent two weeks at this hotel. We traded a large condo for a small, depressing, dark hotel room.
