“Quiet hotel with excellent ambience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

Alpenland Sporthotel boasts of a quiet neighborhood and quintessentially embodies the quiet but friendly nature of most Austrians. It faces a range of majestic mountains which seem straight out of The Sound of Music. Sankt Johann has its share of natural attractions nearby such as Liechesteinstamm and Grassglockner. The hotel is also in the middle of a smaller and humbler community of Austrians. While nearby Salzburg is a bustling town, Sankt Johann gives you your own space.

Alpenland has a choice of restaurants serving halaal food, and is perhaps the only restaurant in the area with great recreational facilities - indoor swimming pool, ping pong, sauna, steam, etc Other amenities are within walking distance of Alpenland Sporthotel - a well-stocked Eurospar supermarket (which unfortunately closes at 6 pm), Billa Supermarket, restaurants and cafes, a beautiful church, shopping, a children's park, a weekly farmer's market and souvenir shops.

The staff at Alpenland are ever-ready to help with information and assistance. The hotel is also children- and disabled-friendly. The only disadvantage is that you have to pay separately for wi-fi use, but you could always walk up the cafes outside for free wi-fi.

Well located amongst the ski slopes and with close vicinity to Salzburg. Rooms are a little small and dated. Typical european food plan options are available and a good breakfast is offered. The worst part of the whole experience was the permeation of cigarette smoke everywhere. It greeted you in the morning when you opened your guest room door and was always present as the "smoking lounge" was central to the hotels, door left open at all times, even when being used by the staff.

Dear F00dy67,

Thank you for your feedback. I always believe that feedback is a gift for us to improve. I’m very sorry to learn about your disappointments about the cigarette smell and we took Action against it already in putting in a better ventelation in the smokers room and tomake sure that the door is closed at all times.

I hope that you will visit us again in the near future and we remain with Kind regards from Austria

We enjoyed out stay in St. Johann im Pongau. The hotel doesn't have a/c luckily for us the weather was very nice in the evening for sleeping. Many good restaurants in the area so I would suggest opting out of the meal plan for lunch and dinner (breakfast was a good deal). Nice pool area and organized events.

Room Tip: If you come by train take a taxi from station. The hotel is close but up a very steep hill. Ask fo...

The location of this hotel was very good, we traveled to several different cities during our stay. The rooms are ok, size was pretty good we did upgrade to a junior suite with a very nice balcony. The furniture, sofa and chair in the room are extremely worn giving the impression of being dirty, it wouldn't take much to replace those and it would greatly improve the feeling while in the room. It was extremely hot when we were there so that was the reason for our poor sleep quality.
The staff was pretty good, a couple of them outstanding...Jasmine, Gudrun, and Petra. We did do a "Sound of Music" Tour the first Monday we were here and it was basically a very expensive cab ride 52euro per person, so if you are going make sure you go to the Original sound of Music Tour in english only this more than made up for the first one!! We also ended up on a local train that took a very long time from Salzburg back to Sankt Johann so be specific when you ask for train schedules i.e. we would like to find the fast train from Salzburg to Sankt Johann.

My husband, our 17year old son, and I stayed here mid June during a trip through Germany and Austria. The customer service was wonderful as was the cleaning/maid service. The Italian restaurant in the lobby area had the best gnocchi...I have tried to re-create it...no luck! The room was a bit dated, but very clean and comfortable. We loved the wood paneling! Wi-Fi did cost in the room, but very well worth it as we were able to connect with our family and friends back in the US during that week. Parking was an additional cost if you were parking under the resort and was worth every Euro after coming home from a long day of seeing the sights. We were able to wash clothes before moving to the next leg of our trip. It was expensive to do this and the washer/dryer were nothing like ours here at home, but it did the trick and we were good to go for another week and a half.

We would definitely stay here again, but ask for a room facing the rear of the resort as our room this trip was facing the shopping mall. It got a bit noisy at 5AM with deliveries.

After following the reviews here before our trip, I really wanted to come down on the side of those that like the resort. However, there were too many things that were disappointing. I should mention that we traded our 2-bedroom timeshare for a stay at this resort, which really didn't feel like a fair trade. We were given 2 hotel rooms, neither with any sort of kitchen or mini kitchen. Since this resort does have apartments and rooms with mini kitchens, we felt that this would have been the fair trade for timeshare owners. Fortunately, Interval has already compensated us for our disappointment.

The good points about the hotel: 1) Location is good - about 45 mins from Salzburg, but other great attractions even closer, such as Liechtensteinklamm and the Werfen ice cave. St Johann itself is a lot busier than we thought, which wasn't a bad thing necessarily. The virtually adjacent mall was actually pretty nice, but if you're looking for a town in the old style, you'll find quite a mix here. 2) Rooms are very clean and beds are comfortable. One of our rooms slept 3 and was a nice size. The room sleeping 2 was a bit cramped.

Bad points: 1) Every little thing costs extra. Charging for Internet these days seems excessive, and at this hotel you have to pay, AND pick up a new ticket with login info each day. AND, only one device may connect at a time. Laundry room has 2 washers and 1 dryer that are quite outdated and require tokens in the amount of 6.60 euro per load. The dryer doesn't work at all, and when I asked the front desk staff about getting another token to run it another cycle, I was told that it worked fine. (We gave up and just hung our clothes up in the room.) 2) There is a charge for parking, even though you aren't in an actual downtown area. Fortunately, there is a nearby area with free city parking that works and is less than a 5 minute walk. So just opt out of the underground parking at the hotel. 3) Pool was fine, but locker rooms were very dirty and smelled bad. The men's locker room was full of water with a hose running from somewhere into one of the sinks for at least a day - I don't know why. 4) Gym is big, but equipment is very outdated. The room itself is shabby and depressing.

Finally, there are some nice views from the resort, but as others have stated there are just as many views of a suburban town with modern structures. We ate at Cavellis and thought it was great. The German restaurant across the street was great for breakfast.

Room Tip: Request a mountain view. The front of the hotel has no view at all.

Dear Salchow,

Firstly I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your feedback in regards to your experiences with our hotel. We very much appreciate the gift of feedback; however I was disappointed that in this case your experience has fallen well short of your expectations.

Please let me explain the following to you because we do have some problems from time to time with guests exchanging their time share to our hotel. Your booking with the Exchange Company is showing on the additional Information given to you that we do not have kitchen units available for exchanges and if you exchange into a "2 bedroom" unit with us you will receive 2 Studio rooms with adjoining doors. It also Shows that parking and other Services are not free of charge so we think it is also not fair to blaim us for the mistakes or wrong Information the Exchange Company may have given to you.

Again I am very sorry for any innconvenience you might have experienced and I remain

with kind regards

the rooms are very nice. overall the hotel is very nice and has a good pool, however almost nothing is included. You have to pay to get wifi tickets which only allow one person at a time to use it. You also must buy tokens for the washing machine and "dryer". The dryer barely does anything after multiple cycles. Another problem is that the rooms are very hot and not air conditioned. our stay was meh. we checked out a day early.
