“We expected more...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

Situated in a great location - on a hill, the view of the lake is gorgeous! It is the biggest advantage of the hotel.
The hotel's owners have introduced austerity (price per room of about 200 euros): bed linen sewn up, rolls cut in half at breakfast, the staff cleans the pool every two to three days.
It's a shame, but the worst thing - hearing in the rooms!
All 14 days of stay, we heard the neighbors walk in the room, watching TV.
Nightmare!

The location of this hotel situated just off a very busy main road would have to be one of the worst for road noise that guests can experience. Especially the rooms at the front. By this I mean the extreme disturbance of heavy commercial traffic commencing at 6am every morning and continuing throughout the day on the way to the number of construction sites in the area as I was to find out. Only by changing rooms with the lakeside view did we get any sleep (at additional cost to us) There are many and more tranquil hotels in the location than this one.Travel agents and the owners alike fail to mention this in their description of location. The food was of low standard and without any imagination at all by the kitchen staff. A large number of guests complained about this and were told that if they did not like it just to choose from the a la carte menu at extra cost(clever ploy). At breakfast a number of items were not replenished even when the dining room was busy, which meant a lot of guests had to continually ask for them every morning. This was controlled by the owners mother who doled out croissants and bread in small amounts at a time rather than fill the baskets. I call this stinginess at the worst! I advise anyone not to put drinks on a tab to pay later as myself and other guests found out that bills for the same repeated orders were never the same amount twice. I advise pay as you go and check each bill.(carefully) rather than endure the endless discussions with bar staff and waiter as to the many discrepancies. An observation made on two occasions was the unchecked dogs that were with guests (which is allowed in Austria) that were allowed to be off the leash and onto the grassed area to foul freely where guests lounged in the daytime. Neither the owners nor the staff stopped this. One evening after dinner in the lounge the dog of one guest ran into this area and barking at and menacing an elderly couple who got quite distressed by this and a guest had to intervene to stop it. On another occasion at dinner a dog off the leash ran into the dining room and jumped up at a table to get bread from a plate while diners were at dinner. The owner and staff were witness to this without stepping in.

Room Tip: If you must stay here then choose a Lakeview room which is marginally quieter but more expensive, th...

Travelled from Newcastle with Inghams. The transfer arrangements were very swift and efficient. Arrived at hotel shortly before sunset and you were made to feel a valued guest from the moment you checked in. Our room was a junior suite with stunning views of the lake and mountain peaks. The room was large and well furnished;the flat screen tv had a handful of English speaking stations and there was an easy to operate free safe in the wardrobe. The bathroom had a powerful shower over the bath and a plentiful supply of hot water. If we had a criticism is was the shortage of toiletries(apart from soap dispenser and tissues). You had dressing gowns and pool towels provided.
You were allocated a table in the dining room(which was split into two) Buffet breakfast was attractively presented with plentiful choice of cold meats/cheeses/fruit/cereal/juices/breads and scrambled eggs and bacon. During breakfast you were asked to select your choice of main course for your evening meal(choice from meat or fish or vegetarian). Dinner was always something to look forward to as the quality and variety of the food (usually minimum of 4 courses) was excellent. Half litre of local red wine about 12 euro. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and highly efficient.offering a most relaxing dining experience.
Evening entertainment was virtually non existent as a result the bar lounge was a most pleasant place to sit in the evening. The village was only a few minutes walk away should you want some nightlife. There was also a large terrace/patio area facing the lake where you could sit and smoke.
The indoor pool/sauna and spa were added attractions. There was small lido on the lakeside which was a 20 minute stroll away. Don't forget your room key which was needed to gain access to the lido facility.
The Bad Ischl-Salzburg bus stopped outside the hotel and opposite was a Spar supermarket and the St Wolfgangsee tourist office
The Hollweger family with their hands on approach and delightful staff helped to make the stay most memorable.

We were fortunate enough to stay in the Hotel Hollweger at the end of August for one week. We had a fabulous room in the new annex reached by a glass covered walkway from the main hotel. The room was spotless, the bed very comfortable and the bathroom enormous. We had booked half board with Inghams and while the evening meals were wonderful for meat eaters, as vegetarians we found thechoice rather limited and somewhat on the " heavy" side. The wonderful breakfast buffet more than made up for it, next time we stay,( and we most certainly will), we will book bed and breakfast only. All in all an excellent hotel which we would reccommend to anyone.

Room Tip: If you are vegetarian, choice of evening meal is limited to one main dish.

We had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Hollweger. It's a charming family run hotel which offers accommodation and service of a very high standard. The staff were brilliant and the food was wonderful. We had a large room at the front of the hotel overlooking the lake - a stunning view. We made good use of the hotel's wonderful swimming pool after our long walks.
The hotel is 10-12 minutes walk from the village centre and lakeside (ferry to various villages on Wolfgangsee.). It has beautiful extensive gardens overlooking the village and nearby mountains. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel, and the excellent Postbus service means you can explore the area without a car.
All in all, a perfectly situated, welcoming hotel. We will stay there again - hopefully soon!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel overlooking the lake.

The Hollweger has a prime location, with uninterrupted stunning views over the lake and to the Zwolferhorn and Schafberg - truly beguiling and every time you look the view is different.
The hotel is beautiful, and family-run, principally by the charming and delightful family daughter.
Choice of room is critical - read other reviews about (e.g.) traffic noise - they are correct. Also beware that the rooms with the best views are over the terrace, where groups are allowed to drink and smoke until late, if the weather is good - that can be noisy.
Food quality is generally high, but again, read other reviews about the management of the dining room - they are correct and breakfast is actually a bit chaotic, with nobody taking overall charge of replenishment or settings.
B&B is probably a wise choice, because there are numerous restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance for snacks, lunch, and dinner.
For dinner, the choice ranges from Papagenos Italian (excellent value with marvellous lake-front views), all the way through to the fine-dining Timbale, which is a wonderful experience and ludicrously over-priced! But plenty of choice in other restaurants, especially the hotel opposite the town hall.
Hollweger has a good gym, beautiful (indoor glass-front) pool, lovely gardens and free Wi-Fi.
So, are people's observations in other reviews fair? Yes they are.
Would we go again? In an instant!

I stayed in March 2011 and was delighted from the moment I arrived. A The hotel enjoys the best location in the village as it is perched above the lake commanding breathtaking views of the large lake that is the Wollfgangsee. The dining rooms afford you this delight which makes for lovely mealtimes.
Rooms are spacious and bathroom excellent - I would recommend a junior suite as these are bigger and have the best views. The owners of the hotel are always on hand and are typically austrian, warm and caring. The food is excellent and the spa area and pool was out of this world! Hotels and spas elsewhere take note! The pool is in a stunning wooden house linked to hotel and has glass windows all around, this means you take in mountain views to all sides whilst you swim! Paradise. There are also steam rooms and sauna.. The location is great as it is a 3 min walk to centre of town and you can reach other lovely villages by bus, or Salzburg which is 30 mins away. Book and enjoy and relax - great value for money.
