“You will not find a better Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

This was our third visit to this beautiful little resort so we knew what to expect from the town itself and the walking in the area. Before we have taken a May time holiday, this time we went in September and although we had an almost perfect weeks weather, if I were to be super critical I would suggest a May visit is better as all the meadow flowers, trees etc. are just coming into bloom.
The fact that we have returned again and again should be recommendation enough but it really is an ideal centre, shortest transfer time from the airport (1/2 an hour) so first to be dropped off (and last to be picked up on return) so a lie-in even on the day of departure. Works in reverse for trips out which is great as well. Fuschl is a small village at the head of the lake and the sun sets at the opposite end, stupendous sunsets are the result. It is a quiet village which livens up slightly at weekends when Austrian/German locals arrive - who obviously know a good thing when they see it.
This was our first visit to the Schutzenhof, (see my other review on another hotel in Fuschl where we stayed before) and it is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in anywhere. It is a traditional Austrian hotel unlike the modern one we visited previously and has a lovely welcoming atmosphere, excellent décor, very friendly professional staff, but best of all the food is absolutely superb, I could not find fault in anything about it (and I do like my food). If you around at lunchtime there is an outdoor restaurant to tempt you right on the lakeside - and the view is to die for.
A room upgrade to get a lake view is well worth it, side views may get you a view of the next building, views from the front of the hotel will get you the road and car park opposite with the hills beyond - but you will also get the traffic noise.
If you like your red wine - try the local Austrian reds (house wine is pretty good) their vineyards are small and not much is exported - but the secret is out, so don't go for the familiar well known names - try something different, and I doubt if you will be disappointed.

Room Tip: Get a lake view

We have just got back from a 2 weeks holiday from this hotel which we booked through Thompsons Lakes and Mountains. The hotel is situated in a lovely village and is central to lots of other places to visit. The food was excellent something different every night, staff very friendly and attentive. Our room was on the 2nd floor and had everything you needed. Fuschl am see is quite but the scenery is stunning and the walks around the lake are beautiful When we go back to Austria again this is the hotel we would stay in.

Just returned home from a great walking holiday with our friends in Austria. (Inghams Lakes and Mountains).
Our hotel for the two weeks was the 4 star Schutzenhof at Fuschl am See, 22 kilometres east of Salzburg.

The hotel earns its 4 stars! It is perfectly situated on the edge of the lake with beautiful scenery all round, expect high dining. Familiar foods were presented in unfamiliar ways which seem to work. At one sitting we had 9 pieces of cutlery! The dining room had no aircon and was quite hot and needed sun blinds when the sun was setting in the evening.

The sunsets across the lake are spectacular. Sunset photography was a great pastime. July was very hot indeed. The lake is fine for swimming.

Rooms were plain but spotless and spacious. Beds are a little on the firm side, that aside after a good days walking they were very welcome. For those who like TV, the room still sports the old CRT TV’s with no English channels. Hotel staff is very friendly and all speak good English. The hotel dog is no less friendly however; it can’t speak English and totally ignores all the comings and goings.

Just got back from a week here. What a wonderful stay. The hotel is right by the lake. We had a partial lake view at the side of the building (booked late through crystal) so not the fanciest of rooms, but a good size , spotlessly clean and what more do you need?
True, no air conditioning, but even tho it was very hot last week (in the 30's) we opened the window and were fine! Most of the week it was very quiet but the last couple of nights another hotel had outside entertainment , which we could hear, but it didnt finish too late, so it was fine!
Others have mentioned lack of English TV - wouldn't know, don't watch TV on holiday- but I suspect there's around the same number of Austrian TV channels in uk hotels ;-)
Food was amazing. Four courses plus a salad course if you could find room (I only managed that once!). Yes you had to pick in the morning, but that was fine. All good quality Austrian fayre. My only quibbles here were 1) At Crystal - they clearly had not passed on my food allergy but there was enough choice to avoid 2) the menu showed some wine choices but it would have been nice to see sample costs of beer and some soft drinks on same sheet. As it happens I'd estimated spot on for the apple juice and overestimated the beer. We drank a lot as it was so hot and the cost added up, but in line with 4* expectations.
As the weather was so fantastic we spent a few days on their lakeside garden (& in the lake). This is lovely, private and peaceful. The only downside is its a couple of minutes walk from hotel and doesn't have a loo. Hotel is upfront about this (and also offer passes to get in free to local beach complex also couple of mins walk away but we didnt fancy it) but Crystals brochure was not, it kind of implied garden was in front of hotel. Obviously not the hotels fault this!
Lastly, the staff were fantastic. All were freindly (without being in your face) and spoke great English. We felt they genuinely wanted you to have a good time. Always had a hello or Guss Grott for you, including the chambermaid, who , despite not having as much English, always had a smile and a good morning.
All in all we had a blissful week of sunbathing, swimming and mountain hiking, and we can't wait to return!

This was our first trip to Austria and we travelled with Thomson Lakes and Mountains/Crystal who again provided an excellent service. We are really pleased we chose this hotel and resort. The hotel is situated on the lakeside in a beautiful area, with lovely views from the front , and although the resort itself is small and quiet there are good public transport links to Salzburg and other resorts, and lots of local signed walking trails which are a good way to explore the area. The hotel is traditional in appearance and was spotlessly clean in all areas. The bedroom was of a good size, light airy and comfortable. There was plenty of storage space and the free use of a room safe. There was television but with no English speaking channels (but as we didn't go on holiday to watch television this didn't bother us at all). The Staff were polite and we were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. We took the half board option and the food we felt was excellent, (4 courses plus a trip to the salad buffet), on one evening during our weeks stay a 5 course meal was provided. Ok, you did have to choose your evening main course and dessert at breakfast that day and the choice was limited to 3 main dishes and 2 desserts, but all the food we had was superbly cooked and presented.

We spent a 5 day break here in late April/early May. The drive from Salzburg is straightforward and the hotel easy to find. The season hadn't really got going when we arrived and there was ample parking in the huge and free car park. The staff were very friendly, courteous and very helpful and all could speak better English than we can speak German. The evening meals were absolutely fantastic throughout our stay and were some of the best meals we have EVER had. We had intended eating out but after our first meal we abandoned that idea - this was a very, very good decision. The breakfast was buffet style and well presented and offered a wide choice. We became slightly obsessed with the delicious dried apple rings! The room was spacious, the bed comfortable and the view of the lake from our room, which had a balcony, was stunning - regardless of the weather.
We walked round the lake (11km) and whilst this was very enjoyable, it was a pity that there was no cafe (other than a couple of hotels) enroute (there were signs of building work, however, so this may be about to change). Fuschl am See is a pretty little town/village with two convenience stores and a couple of cafes. We were lucky enough to see the raising of the May pole - a herculean effort seemingly involving most of the men from the village with huge poles. The process took at least 4 hours and the rest of the village were thoroughly merry by the time it was vertical!
Thoroughly recommended and even if you are passing by I would suggest missing the restaurant would be crazy!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 207
