We were a bit disappointed when we pulled up at this motel but we need not have worried,the rooms were very clean and welcoming.The bed was very comfy and we had a quiet ,good night and the staff were helpful and friendly.The thing that was very disappointing was the restaurant where you got your $2 breakfast ,it was so gross we ran out! It was full of thick cigarette smoke,the seats were ripped and the whole place looked really unclean.We had a very long drive and had gone for breakfast about 6.15am and although there was nothing else open there is NO WAY we would have eaten there.

We don't usually stay in motels, but the price of the hotel chains in Custer were over the top high, so we took a chance on this motel, after reading the reviews, and we were very pleased. The room was very clean, and had some nice homely touches. The hotel is very central and there are some great restaurants right beside the hotel. We took the option of the breakfast coupon though the hotel, for around $2 per person which was superb, giving us each a full hot breakfast. Overall we would highly recommend this hotel, especially as it is very close to Crazy Horse and an excellent stop over on route to Monument Valley.

Chief Motel was a solid value for the $61.10 with taxes in September. It is not a name brand hotel, so don't expect brand new furnishings or gymns or high tech key cards. What you can expect is an old motel room which feels like you are staying in an older relative's bedroom which is very clean with homey touches as quilted bedspreads and crocheted decorative pillowcases. The bathroom did not look like a magazine with its pink tub. However, it was a fine size, had all the amenities wanted, and was extremely pleasing in its cleanliness. The bedroom had enough room for two. I don't know if they have large family rooms. There was a comfortable recliner for watching television. The owners are very pleasant and freindly. There is a large, popular restaurant next door with a varied menu, and many additional restaurants. There is a small supermarket down the street. There is a large indoor pool enclosed three sides in glass directly in front of the motel, which is on the main street in small downtown Custer. If you are heading south after visiting Mt. Rushmore, it is very convenient. It seemed more convenient than going back north towards touristy, busy(and fun) Hill City or Rapid City.

We stayed at the Chief Motel this summer and the stay was excellent. Our room was very nice and the owners were very friendly. We also reserved a guided tour, it was the most memorable part of our stay we would recommend it to anyone! We look forward to staying at the Chief Motel again in the future.
