There are a lot of choices for campgrounds in Custer State Park, but not being familiar with any of them, we just had to take a guess at which one we thought would be the best. We chose Legion Lake for several reasons: 1. It's small - we thought it wouldn't be too crowded or noisy and we were right 2. it was in a good place to access the Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake and the Wildlife Loop. 3. It was within a few minutes walk to Legion Lake where the swimming was good. There is also a small restaurant and gift shop near the lake. I think we made the right choice with this campground. Oh - be careful of the bison who wander through the campground - they are magnificent but you have to make sure to stay clear of them, be quiet, and move slowly - they can be dangerous. And here's big compliment to the state parks of South Dakota - best bathrooms and showers we've ever seen.
