“We'll be back!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012 via mobile

Awesome little resort that is slightly secluded but close to what you see in Custer State Park. The resort has a small family feel and is nowhere like being rushed in nearby Keystone.

We had a sleeping cabin and it was better than we thought and felt like home. The cabin had a fridge, coffee pot, full bathroom and to out surprise...satellite tv on a small flat screen. We didn't expect any tv at all. Cabin also had excellent air conditioning system (and heat).

There are no phones in the sleeping cabins, but we were able to get Verizon data and phone coverage from the location.

I'll agree, the beds were a bit hard, but running around so much during the day, we were so tired that we overlooked it.

Out of all the Custer resorts, Legion Lake seemed to be the smallest and the most comfortable one. Oh, it's set on a beautiful lake as well.

Kudos to the GM for reading these comments!

We booked a 7 person housekeeping cabin 7 months in advance. I spent at least half an hour or more on the phone with the booking agent to find the right spot for our family vacation. We were considering all of the Custer State Park resorts, and the reservation agent felt Legion Lake resort would be best for us as a family of four who loves to fish and swim. I asked for a cabin as close to the lake as possible. I was told the cabin I booked was within steps of the lake. When we arrived, we were disappointed to find out that our cabin (no. 12) was nowhere near the lake, and was in fact, on a fairly busy road used by other guests to get to their cabins close to the lake and by employees of the resort to get to their accomodations. We asked for another cabin, but were told there were none available. When I described my conversation with the booking agent to the staff at LL, I was told that they can't promise a specific cabin when you make your reservation, except for instances where they have returning guests. So, unless you are a regular who stays there every year, you are low on the totem pole for getting the best cabins. Everyone was disappointed, but decided to try to make the best of it. The staff, particularly Teresa, worked very hard to make up for our disappointment, and we appreciated that very much.

Legion Lake is beautiful and in a perfect location in Custer State Park. The lodge itself is homey and comfortable and we enjoyed having meals there. The cabin had just a few issues, other than the location, that were minor annoyances: the satellite tv didn't work and it was a bit dirty, but those things didn't really bother us too much since we weren't there to sit in front of the tv anyway.

All in all, we are glad we stayed there, and ended up having a great time. We caught a trout in Legion Lake, brought it back to our cabin to cook on the campfire, but had to wait a little while to get the campfire going because there was a big buffalo hanging around in our yard! That was definitely one of the highlights of our stay.

If you enjoy nature. If you want a central location in the best part of the Black Hills. If you have kids or young adults who need to be active. If you are tired of giant megacondo enclaves. If you want hot Starbucks in the middle of nowhere. If you need a cheezy buffalo shirt. This place has a beach where there are virtually no beaches. World class photography and nature viewing. An eclectic staff of locals, retirees, and worldwide college students, all smart and interesting. Kind of spendy, but worth every penny. The lodging here is mostly classic cabins; clean, basic. If you want modern, square, straight rooms this is not for you. This is all about nature. The resort is nestled in a singularly beautiful location beside a singularly beautiful lake. Don't forget your mountain bike for the nearby Mickelson trail.

Room Tip: The resort is not real forthcoming about cabin locations. Try to find an old adobe map of the resor...

Cabin was clean, with updated bathrooms, new heater and satellite based Internet... Yet still a rustic style with plenty of privacy and nature! Everyone there was welcoming and hospitable.

As a family of 4, we stayed in a sleeping cabin (no kitchenette). It was very clean, simple and comfortable. It is a small cabin but we stayed for 4 nights with no problems. Of all the places in the park, we preferred Legion Lake because the cabins are away from the main road. There is also the small lake which the kids loved to swim in. It was peaceful, the pine trees lovely, and we had a campfire each night. The food at the Lodge was mediocre. There is better food to be had in Custer, or Hill City. Legion Lake is a great location for WInd Cave Nat'l Park, the Wildlife loop and hiking everywhere. We found the staff to be knowledgeable and helpful. But renting a paddle boat is highway robbery. Overall couldn't have asked for more! We'd definitely go back.

We booked a cabin that ostensibly sleeps 5 for just the 2 us - because we wanted to have a good view of the lake & got a great view. Only 2 of the cabins are actually on the lake, so be sure to confirm view if this is important to you.

Cabin was clean & the furniture (hewn trees) seemed fairly new. One tiny bedroom had double bed & a single bed with barely room to walk. So much furniture that the door would not close. The other double bed was in the main room with room to get in from only one side. The only other furniture was a small table & 4 hardback chairs. Five people would be very cramped in this cabin. Tiny bathroom.

Cabin has tiny fridge, stove, coffee pot & microwave - but absolutely no utensils or dishes. If you want to cook (or even eat takeout), you have to bring everything.

There is a flat screen TV - but the cable wasn't working. Someone from the office came & tried unsuccessfully to fix it. The next morning we asked for & were promised a partial refund because the TV didn't work -- refund never came.

Be sure to take a flashlight if you plan to return to cabin after dark.

Thank you for your review of Legion Lake. One of the improvements we have made due to
customer requests is we now have pots, pans and dishes in our 5 and 7 person cabins. We
work hard to make improvements to make every guest experience as positive as possible. My hope is that you went home with many stories and memories of Custer State Park. Thank you again for your review.

We stayed in a 5-person Housekeeping cabin (#11) on Legion Lake. The cabin was very pricey - $175 a night. It was two rooms and private bathrooom – a sun room with a twin bed and a double bed, then a larger room with kitchenette (mini fridge, stove top burners, sink, microwave, toaster, and 4-cup coffee pot with coffee and filters), seating area with a very rickety table, and another double bed. The curtains and trees kept some of the sun out, so we didn't have trouble sleeping a little later in the morning. We had ample sleeping room for our family of five, although counter space was limited and you could barely fit four around the table. For a cabin for 5, the table should have been larger and had five chairs. Outside we had a campground grill, a picnic table, and some chairs.

Cons – no dishes, utensils, pots or pans. You need to supply your own.
Not enough seating or table space inside for a family of five.
Linens were pretty worn.
Pricey
Staff at check-in were distant and unfriendly

Pros – Ideal location – 10 minutes from the Visitor's Center and its many programs.
Air-conditioning, flat screen tv (which we didn't use), and free Wifi in our cabin
Close to the Wildlife loop and town of Custer (about an hour from Sylvan Lake area and an hour from Mount Rushmore)
Right on Lake Legion – which had a playground and a small sandy beach for swimming. (Not all the cabins are as close to the beach and lake as we were. We requested to be close and they accommodated that request). We visited Sylvan lake and it was very congested and busy. The swimming area could not be walked to from the cabins. It was also quite far north in the park and not close to many of the other areas. It makes a good half day trip from Lake Legion. Driving around we were pleased we had chosen Lake Legion area. Blue Belle would be a good choice for families wanting to do the chuckwagon and horseback riding activities. The park is quite large and travel between points is slow.

Overall, you have to decide if the great location is worth the high price tag.

I would like to thank you first for your review. We now have put pots, pans, and dishes into all the 5 and 7 person cabins. I appreciate that I receive feedback from our guests on what they would like to see and what needs to be improved. We do our best and take your input very seriously. We strive to achieve strong customer service and I am upset to see that our front desk people didn't welcome you properly. I assure you that it will not happen again and we look forward to serving you again someday. Every guest that comes to Legion Lake is considered family.
