“Great food for great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2014

We read about Una Casita on TripAdvisor so we decided to check it out. We went in the afternoon just to make sure we knew where it was. We talked with Elly, the owner, and told him we would be back later for dinner, but when we went there in the evening we found the food to be not quite as we were expecting. When we paid, it was 25 quetzals each (just over $3), and he explained to us that he didn't prepare for a better meal because people come all the time and say they'll come for dinner, but never show up. I wasn't flustered by this because the meal was still alright and he gave us a good price.

So we made reservations for an exact time for the next day, and we were very impressed by the food. We went there the next night too! So all you have to do is tell him you'll be there at a certain time and he will be ready for you.

FYI - bring some bug spray. Also, a little extra money just in case you want to buy some of his crafts he has for sale there.

“We love Eddy!! ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

We went to el remate for two nights and stumbled across a sign that said vegetarian Resturant. On the first night we went up and it looked closed and due to our lack of español we couldn't understand the man at the door who looked really upset so we were confused and walked away. We made sure the next night that we went up to una casita to suss it out in daylight and found the same man from the night before and we managed to make a reservation for 4 people for 6pm. This was the best decision we made. We got there at 6pm greeted by Eddy in a pink apron and hairnet very excited and already cooking for us. We were sat in the front of eddys house and he cooked us the most delicious vegetarian meal we had eaten yet. Eddy was so hospitable and lovely we were sad we couldn't speak more Spanish to chat with him! Moral of the story if you want a delicious and cheap vegetarian meal don't pass up on Una casita!!

“Hidden Gem! Vegetarian Paradise in El Remate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

We almost gave up the search for this tiny spot, after several wrong turns and not believing it could be at the end of a quiet residential street. But it is! Continue past the Pedro Hermano Hostel about 100 yards to the end of the pavement. On your right there will be a tiny sign for "Una Casita" outside of a bamboo gate. Elly will let you in and make you right at home at his patio restaurant that is adjacent to the solar-powered open-air house he has built himself. Fresh tamarind juice arrived quickly and when we just asked for something vegetarian he went right to work. When our meal arrived, it exceeded our expectations! Fresh, flavorful, huge variety of vegetables, several different dishes, all very tasty. It was served with a SUPER spicy pickled pepper blend that was also great. After the delicious meal our host built a fire in his fire pit and invited us to sit with him and get acquainted. It was far and away the most personal and memorable evening we had on the entire trip. And the price was very reasonable: 60 Quetzales (< $10) all told. If you are in El Remate, go to Una Casita!
