We had a superior room, which featured a porch with hammock and chair. Looked out onto a secure garden with La Ceiba tree in the middle. Explanatory signs about Mayan meanings of the landscape. An elevated patio looks out over the quite large lake. Give a call on the Toucan Express monitor, and a margarita will be whisked on a funky trolley system from the main hotel to the overlook. Another major plus is that birds are fed at a tree a short distance from dining pavilion (elevated), so beautiful Orioles, Tanagers, and the like. Free Wi-Fi. Dinner and breakfast can be included in room; if you tire of the standard offering (meat or veg), then it's possible to order off the menu. Had great local river fish one time. Just let staff know in advance. A modest gift shop on premises. Nice walk around the lake on non-busy road to the Biotopic park, where we saw lots of birds, including Toucan. Multi-lingual staff. Guides picked us up from airport in Flores to arrive at hotel and then took us to Tikal as well as bird watching.

Room Tip: Choose a room with porch; even upscale is economical.

My wife and I stayed at Hotel La Casa De Don David in El Remate on our 40th wedding anniversary trip to Guatemala. This is halfway between Flores and Tikal. With the help of Melver at the front desk arrangements were made for a shuttle to Yaxha the afternoon we arrived and for Tikal the next morning.

We stayed in room #13 which is at the end of the row of rooms closest to Lake Peten Itza. This is a quiet room away from the restaurant area. Our stay was during the rainy season and we were the only ones staying there, so noise was not a concern. The room was clean with sufficient hot water and air conditioning. The garden area provides a lot of privacy. We felt safe and secure in our lodgings.

Our room included dinner for two. We chose the regular Guatemalan dinner which was very good. We invited some friends from Poptun to join us for dinner. They can't speak any English and we can't speak much Spanish. David's wife, Rosita, came out and translated for us. Sitting on the veranda and conversing with our friends through Rosita made for a very enjoyable evening. Also, we enjoyed the stories that David told us about his exploits when he first moved to the Peten. We had breakfast before heading out for our tour of Tikal. My wife had the homemade yoghurt and I had the banana pancakes. Both were delicious.

I can highly recommend Hotel La Casa De Don David as a base for touring Tikal and Yaxha. We were thoroughly pleased with our stay and the hospitality provided to us.

The rooms here are indeed pretty basic with hard beds but they have what you need with no frills. We found the food pretty good and having dinner included rather than breakfast makes it good value. The location is great and the public spaces and garden really nice. Best of all is the chap at reception whose name we never got. He was brilliant even about finding out about buses from Honduras to get us there and arranged our transfer into Belize at the end. Very helpful and friendly with it.

Great location by the lake, stayed in one of the garden rooms which was very peaceful. Staff extremely helpful, and food very nice and wholesome. Sit out on the garden veranda and drink a homemade smoothie delivered by zip wire from the restaurant! Nice bathing at the lake about 15 minutes walk away. Opposite the bathing spot is a park (biosphere) with howler monkeys on the longer trail. Hotel is ideally located for visiting Tikal and fairly close to airport (get the local bus from outside the hotel, a lot cheaper than their shuttle and not much slower). Hired a bike through hotel to ride on the tracks near the lake (shame the brakes wern't maintained though!).

There's both good and bad things about this property, and the bad is that the hotel rooms are bare-bones basic. In fact, it was just a step above camping. BUT, if you can live with that, then you'll enjoy your stay here, as we did.

The location is ideal for visiting Tikal, because it's halfway between the Flores airport and the Tikal park. The hotel arranged our airport pick-up and drop-off ($20/each way) and it also provided a wonderful tour guide (Oliver) for our visit to Tikal.

Though our room (#10) was bare-bones, it was clean, air conditioned and quiet.

We used their restaurant several times, and I thought the food was good. I especially enjoyed their smoothies. (We also ate dinner one evening at Las Orquideas, which is a 5 minute walk down the road. It's an Italian restaurant that features home-made pasta.)

Bottom line, if you require comfort and luxury, don't stay here. But if you can take some bad with the good, you'll appreciate the convenience and atmosphere, and it'll be a worthwhile experience.

Room Tip: Room 10 had two double beds, air conditioning, and was relatively quiet.

Great location (in between Flores and Tikal), extremely friendly staff, basic rooms but great for the price, beautiful setting on the lake, and right in the town of El Remate where there are restaurants and a few shops. Not much to do here but a great place to stay while visiting Tikal.
