“Decent place, great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

The garden district is a great part of NOLA, with old mansions, trees, cemeteries, and hip areas. The hotel is nice enough, but a little noisy with the streetcar in the front and the nearby hospital with ambulances arriving. Interior is standard hampton, with decent bed, sheets, TV, etc. Cleaned well, newer carpet and furniture. The folks are nice. If you are looking for something away from downtown or crazy Bourbon St, this is just fine, especially if the price is right.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor away from the front.

We stayed two nights at this hotel when we moved our daughter into her residence hall at Tulane University this past fall. We were disappointed at check-in to learn that the deluxe king we had reserved three months prior was unavailable. We were given a simple room with two doubles and offered the option to move after the first night, which we considered a hassle so we did not move. Other than that glitch, our stay was pleasant, the staff was helpful. Breakfast was fresh with extensive offerings. There is a new Fresh Market (upscale grocery store) just one block away, it is a great place to grab some prepared food or a bottle of wine. We had a nice, moderately priced dinner at Superior Seafood, located about three blocks from the hotel. Our cab pick-up on departure day was 7:00 a.m. and the staff had breakfast to-go bags prepared for guests who had to leave early—nice touch. We love the streetcar, but the rails are being serviced/replaced and some routes are interrupted.

Room Tip: Confirm your room selection prior to arrival.

Thank you for the positive comments on our breakfast and location. I apologize that the room you requested was unavailable at check-in. We do our very best to accommodate all guest requests. We would like to extend our congratulations to your daughter on attending Tulane University and hope to see you again the next time you are in town for a visit.

Best wishes,

Let me start off by cautioning against booking this hotel with the idea of riding the trolley (street car) into the French Quarter/Bourbon. The trolley line is under construction, so if you don't have a vehicle, it's the bus (long wait and overcrowded), taxi (expensive), or walking (wear Dr. Scholl's and bring an inhaler and pepper spray). The hotel itself is pleasantly situated in the heart of the Garden District. Decent continental breakfast, but stay away from the "eggs"! Service-wise, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. One negative about the room is the temperature control. The room was freezing or hot and no amount of adjustment would change that. I will say there are no restaurants close to the hotel, so plan meals when you are going to be elsewhere. I would stay here again, IF the trolley was repaired.

First and foremost, they let us park our car for our cruise - the entire duration for FREE. We saved $90. In a city where secure parking seems practically unheard of, that is a fantastic deal.

The location is wonderful. It is right on the St. Charles street car line which takes you directly to the edge of the French Quarter. So basically, you pay half the price to stay outside of the Quarter, but get the added advantage of experiencing one of the iconic New Orleans attractions.

There is a great restaurant right down the street which was recommended to us by the awesome staff called Superior Seafood which had various happy hours including $6 dozen raw oysters and half price drinks. So awesome. It is within walking distance to the hotel, but they do offer free valet parking if you choose to drive.

The hotel staff is so friendly and helpful. We are really so grateful for that.

Their breakfasts are wonderful as well as their crackers, cheese and grape evening snack.

Just a great hotel overall. We will definitely stay again.

We found the hotel very clean and in a very nice area. The staff were always very helpful. Cheese and crackers with grapes was very nice when you first come in from a days sightseeing.
Breakfast was plentiful, and it was nice to sit outside in a morning.
The pool was too small and did not look very clean.
If you wanted to eat out at night the streetcars work all night and is only 3 dollers for all day.

Room Tip: Away from the icemasker

I am a Hilton Diamond VIP and travel every other week for work. I often stay at Hampton Inns and find them to usually be updated, clean, and modern. This particular Hampton in New Orleans has a very pleasing exterior and lobby, but very tired rooms. As other reviewers have stated, the furniture is light oak and "cheap looking," bathrooms have not been updated (still have the ceiling light fixture and plain white counter tops, as well as white/gold plain bathroom tile). The only upgrade in the bathroom was a curved shower rod! The good thing about my room on the 6th floor was how quiet it was. I slept very well; didn't hear a sound from neighboring rooms. My company paid $159 a night for this room, and it was only worth about $99 because of the outdated condition of the rooms; if they remodeled and made this a more pleasant place to stay it would be a great hotel because of location and quiet atmosphere.

Room Tip: Top floor; very quiet.

I stayed at Hampton Inn Garden District for over three weeks while teaching a short course at Tulane University. The hotel was clean and comfortable. The daily tea, cheese & crackers, and grapes were delightful. Hot coffee and water for tea was available round the clock. The staff at the front desk was professional. The St Charles streetcar stops less than a block from the front door, and riding the streetcar to the university every day was pleasant, even in the month of June. The only negative is the lack of an on-site laundry. My choice was to schlep my dirty clothes 8 blocks to a place on Magazine Street or to lug my hamper onto the streetcar and go to a place on St Charles Avenue closer to CBD.

Room Tip: The rooms looking over St Charles Avenue cost more.
