“Jewel in the French Quarter”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

I am normally in New Orleans during the Thanksgiving weekend and have stayed at a lot of properties. This was the first time I stayed at a property directly on Bourbon Street in the middle of the quarters. It was an elegant property and a great experience. Once inside of the property you could not tell you were in the middle of Bourbon Street. The hotel has the Irvin Mayfield Jazz Playhouse which offers free concerts from the local musicians nightly. Friday night's entertainment was excellent. The hotel has a beautiful pool and garden courtyard with rooms that open up to each. The scenery is beautiful. The entire hotel staff was pleasant and very accommodating. I look forward to staying here again.

Room Tip: All of the rooms appeared to be a great choice.

My family came to New Orleans for three
nights to enjoy the city and stupidly chose the "Royal" Sonesta as our hotel.
When you walk in, the lobby is very nice and deceptively makes you feel as though this is a fabulous hotel. But the rooms show the truth; water pressure is low, toilets are earsplitting when they flush and do not work well, the pillows are very uncomfortable, and the carpets are worn along with the furniture and chair.
The bellhop suggested the restaurant r'evolution downstairs, which was the highlight of the hotel. But he also suggested a restaurant for breakfast that was even more expensive than the pricey dinner from the previous night.
The location of this hotel is a joke. Many people only know about Bourbon Street in the French Quarter when it comes to New Orleans, and that is a mistake. From 4 pm to 7 am, Bourbon is loud, crowded, and pretty nasty to say the least. The clubs with showgirls and nude posters just don't tie in to the history and architecture of the area for some reason I don't understand. The hotel is loud during the night, with shouting and whooping from mostly drunken people. It is easy to wake up at night and very hard to go back to sleep.
The Bottom line: look for a hotel on Royal Street, a quiet road a block from bourbon which is lined with galleries and restaurants minus the problems of Bourbon. Or try the Garden District and visit the French Quarter instead of staying there.

Great hotel right on Bourbon Street! The hotel is absolutely beautiful! Especially during the holidays. The staff was excellent. If you don't mind spending a little extra cash, I'd recommend staying at this hotel. I never checked out the pool though. I spent most of my time out on the streets partying.

We didn't stay there but did go to the Thanksgiving Brunch. It was not cheap, but it was amazingly good. There were few desires in culinary terms that were not met by this buffet from the caveair with blini selection, the large fresh seafood offerings, meats of every possible hope and desire, and desserts that were excellent. The staff worked hard and long to make sure that you were pleased and that every need was satisfied; the endless Mimosa and the Bloody Mary service certainly helped to make it a relaxing time. If you want ot experience a certain life in New Orleans where there was existential luxury and satisfaction, there can be no better way than to visit the Royal Sonesta for the Thanksgiving Brunch.

Love the Sonesta. Centrally located on Bourbon Street yet inside, worlds away. Elegant yet comfortable with a super staff that always makes you feel at home. My Number One choice in New Orleans - and has been for 20 years.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool are quieter and lovely.

My husband and I stayed at the Royal Sonesta for a wedding. The hotel is beautiful- a stark contrast from Bourbon Street! The pool area is a nice quiet haven if you want to get away from the crowds outside the hotel. Our room was on the 4th floor, overlooking the pool and even had an exterrior door for easy access to the pool deck. The hotel has a jazz bar (live music every night) and coffee shop in the lobby and is in a great location for access to Canal St, the casino and Riverwalk. Room service is expensive (spent $45 on breakfast that would have been $7 at IHOP).

The wedding took place in the courtyard and banquet room at the hotel. It was so convienent for guests to be able to stay in the same place as the wedding. The courtyard is on the small side, but the ceremony turned out beautiful and very intamate. The food at the reception was delicious. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the pool to escape from the sounds of Bourbon street.
