“Great location, good building, poor hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

The Hotel Mazarin is wonderfully located in a charming, courtyarded building. The staff were fine and helpful.

However as a hotel it is poor. There are no public rooms other than the lobby, the bars are hidden away, our room was fine, but not worth the cost and the breakfasts were very poor - wizened and cold sausages, flavourless bacon and tepid scrambled eggs.

It seemed to me to be trading on its location and barely truing to be a Hotel.

My husband, a New Orleans native, and I held our wedding at the Hotel Mazarin in December 2013. The catering staff, Rachel and Brent, helped us throw an inviting and flawless event. The classic courtyard is large, yet intimate. The hotel is also the only courtyard venue with a retractable rain-proof roof, which (along with heaters) came in handy for an unseasonably cold wedding day. The hotel's recommendations for a photographer and florist were spot-on. The florist created a beautiful piece for the courtyard fountain. We held a picture-perfect ceremony in classic New Orleans style.

Following the ceremony, we led a Second Line through the Quarter. The hotel's location is perfect- right in between Bourbon and Royal. Needless to say, our guests enjoyed parading right through the heart of the Quarter. We wouldn't have done it any other way!

The last portion of our event was a catered reception in the hotel's La Louisianne room. The food, drinks, and waitstaff are simply perfect. I am a bit of a "food snob" and was absolutely delighted by the preparation and presentation of the vast menu. We chose a buffet option and were pleasantly surprised by the freshness and timeliness of the food. Our guests raved about the quality. Some of our family, who work with local catering businesses, remarked that the food was so good they had gone back to the buffet three times. We had an open bar and no drink remained unfilled. The waitstaff also helped direct the evening's activities and made the event flow.

We retired to the beautiful wedding suite, where the catering staff had previously sent plates of every dish to our room (for a late night snack), as well as, a bottle of champagne. We are delighted in our selection of the Hotel Mazarin for our wedding. It was simply perfect in every way.

Room Tip: There is no wrong choice in these beautiful rooms. Ask for a balcony, if you desire a true New Orle...

We recently stayed at the Hotel Mazarin in the Petite Suite. It is back from Bourbon street and although we heard some noise one morning, it was relatively quiet for the French quarter. The room was lovely and a lot like a regular room with an added sitting room. I spent my first night without a bedside table on my side of the bed (there is a very narrow corner passage into the bathroom) but upon request, the staff found me a bedside table and a lamp allowing me to read in bed at night. The staff is very pleasant and very friendly and could not have been nicer or more accommodating. The only gripes I have are a minor one and, for me, a major one. The minor gripe was simply that the breakfast was exactly the same every day: scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, grits. It was good and I love grits so I was fine, but there was absolutely no variation.

The major gripe was that we could never get any water pressure in the shower. We asked and were given no hints that worked. The water came out in a very gentle small spray which made it take twice as long for me to wash my hair. As we were there during a very cold snap, a warm, more powerful shower would have been most welcome. Unfortunately, the water pressure would probably keep me from returning when there are so many other choices around.

Just a warning, too. The 320's (including petite suite 325), which are back from Bourbon street so perhaps more quiet and open on their own courtyard, are reached by about two dozen stairs. We found no elevator. This was good for us because we wanted the exercise, but we do not remember being aware that they could not be reached by elevator before we arrived.

Otherwise, it was lovely.

Room Tip: The 320's are away from bourbon street, but you have to climb 2 dozen stairs to get to them.

Easy walking access to the French Quarter and nearby attractions, and close enough to quickly disappear into your room and leave the party behind when you're over it all.

Helpful staff, decent breakfast, can't imagine a better stay in New Orleans at this price.

Had a pleasant stay. A very decent hotel. Staff was friendly and courteous and the hotel was clean and well kept. Beds were very comfy! Unfortunately there was a gross plastic sheet covering the courtyard, presumably to keep out the rain, but other than that the courtyard was very nice. It's not the most exciting place but I'd stay here again for sure.

The bad: Due to it's proximity to Bourbon Street, it can be a bit noisy. This not the fault of the hotel; it's what it will be in any hotel that is so close. House keeping was a little too early getting to the room each day for cleaning. Granted, partially my fault for not utilizing the Do Not Disturb sign.

The good: The staff is helpful, courteous, and professional. The rooms are nice, with comfortable beds, plenty of room, and kept well-cleaned. The balcony rooms on the 3rd floor are nice if you want some outdoor space. Large safe, and coffee maker in each room. If your interest is in exploring the French Quarter, the location is ideal.

Room Tip: Balcony room on the 3rd floor if you like a bit of the outdoors

My husband and I visited New Orleans over MLK weekend and chose Hotel Mazarin based on the reviews here. We were very pleased. Our room was a superior king room with a balcony overlooking Bienville Street. Yes, we heard ALL the noise from Bourbon Street and the traffic on Bienville Street below. Friday night was loud. Saturday night was really loud with stragglers yelling at each other at 4:30am and the garbage trucks coming by at 5am. Sunday was sooo much quieter and Monday night was quite peaceful. We didn't let the noise bother us and considered it part of the experience. We even saw a Second Line Wedding Parade go right by the hotel.
Breakfast was good each day. One day we wanted a bit more than what was out, so we asked the staff for omelets. They were excellent.
The hotel staff was extremely friendly from the front desk staff, to the doormen, to the breakfast room staff to housekeeping.and maintenance. If we travel to New Orleans again, we will stay at Hotel Mazarin.
