Background: My husband and I are currently in our 30s, we traveled to Louisiana to run in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half-Marathon and to experience the city of New Orleans. We selected Hotel Mazarin based on other TripAdvisor reviews and stayed at the hotel in February 2013.
Booking: We made our reservation directly through the hotel’s website. I also e-mailed the hotel asking for a quiet room. (Our request was met as our room was located in the back courtyard.)
The Hotel: The hotel has a great location in the French Quarter (on Bienville between Bourbon and Royal.) I loved the décor in the common areas as it reminded guests that they were in New Orleans! Hotel highlights included a main courtyard, a back courtyard, a small gym, a small business center, a breakfast area and a wine bar. Our room was modern but again was decorated in a style to fit the French Quarter. Room highlights included a super-comfy king bed, a large flat-screen TV, bathrobes, complimentary Wi-Fi and complimentary bottled water (in a “cooling” fridge.)
Breakfast: A buffet breakfast was complimentary for all guests. The buffet included tea, coffee, juices, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, cereal, an assortment of breads and pastries, yogurt, etc. We were very satisfied with the breakfast selection. You can eat your breakfast in the breakfast area or in the main courtyard.
Wine Bar: If you enjoy wine, you should definitely check out the hotel’s wine bar “Patrick’s Bar Vin.” The bar had a great atmosphere and offered some amazing wines! (Try a glass of Patrick’s “Secret” Pinot Grigio for only $5!)
Negative Notes: We experienced three issues while staying at Hotel Mazarin. Issue 1 - After a quick and friendly check-in, a staff member was appointed to show us to our room. However, this staff member didn’t know where our room was and we walked around the hotel for about 15 minutes until we found our room. (We did not complain about this but believe that the staff should be familiar with the room locations.) Issue 2 - Our room was not serviced the first day of our stay. The next day, we called the front desk and asked that our room be serviced that morning. (We did not have a problem in this area for the remainder our stay.) Issue 3 – A suite was being renovated near our room and on several instances we had to walk through construction materials to get to our room. (We didn’t complain about the renovation as we had already unpacked and didn’t want to waste time moving to another room, however, no guest should have to walk though construction materials to get to their room in a luxury hotel!)
Overall: We had a very nice stay at Hotel Mazarin. The staff was very friendly, and we loved the location and the amenities. I am rating this hotel as 4 stars instead of 5 due to the three issues noted above. As this is a newer hotel, I am sure that these items will be fine-tuned shortly. I would recommend this hotel to family and friends, and would stay here again on a future trip to NOLA.
