I am a budget conscious traveler who is always looking for a great value when it comes to hotels. I am willing to overlook outdated accommodations as long as they are clean and well kept. The French Market Inn does not fall under either one of those categories.
I reserved a room here last week, but shortly after checking in, I requested a refund. The hotel is very well located, but the woman at the desk was not very friendly. In addition to the room rate, I was charged $30 to valet my vehicle. I received my room key and left the tiny lobby to put my bags up in my room. The hallway was very dingy and dark, and I noticed two men pulling up the carpeting down the hall and figured they were in the midst of renovations. I had a difficult time getting the door opened and needed to use substantial force. The room looked okay although it was in need of some updating and maintenance. The paint was peeling in certain areas—the carpets were dirty—there were old stains on the bed sheets—I noticed mildew in the bathroom tub—and the deadbolt was broken off the door. Despite all of this, I was willing to overlook all the cosmetic issues due to the price and my short duration of stay. Just as I was about to leave the room and explore New Orleans, I saw something scurry across the hotel floor. It was a rat! I was so disgusted, but relieved I noticed before I got too comfortable. After I saw this, I proceeded to the front desk to inform them of my unwanted visitor and requested a refund. The woman at the desk did not seem surprised and never once apologized to me. I asked for a refund and she informed me that I might not be able to receive one. I asked to speak to a manager and she told me that I would have to call the hotel management company. I was appalled by the way I was being treated and the lack of apology. I was able to speak with an operator from the company, but the manager was unavailable when I called. The operator apologized and was able to refund me. I would not recommend staying in this hotel unless you are willing to overlook its condition, rodents, and unfriendly staff. There is nothing redeeming about this hotel at this point in time, except it location. I am surprised that the French Market Inn is rated as highly as it is on Trip Advisor. It does not deserve 3.5 stars in its current condition.
Luckily, I was able to find an alternative room at the Omni Hotel shortly after leaving the French Market Inn. Although the Omni was more expensive, the service was impeccable and I could sleep soundly knowing I would not have any unwanted visitors lurking in my room.
