I am quite surprised by so much criticism in recent reviews. I stayed at the Sheraton New Orleans in November 2013 and while there are far better Starwood properties, my personal experience at this hotel was not that bad. On the contrary, I enjoyed my short stay and would also return without any hesitation. In contrast to most hotels (including some Sheratons) you find in Europe, the Sheraton New Orleans is a decent place to stay: big rooms, great views, working wireless internet connection and a perfect location make up for the weak points.
The thing I liked most about this hotel is its location: right on Canal street which can be considered as the main street in downtown New Orleans. It’s a short walk of about 5 minutes to the French quarter with all its attractions, restaurants and bars and a convenient 15 min. walk to Place d’Armes and the cathedral. Those who also want to visit Garden District will find a cable car stop next to the hotel. Also Canal street offers some nice architecture as well as shopping facilities.
The lobby and reception area are quite big and have a good ambience. Some internet terminals are available next to the bar (limited free time). I also liked the fact that there is a Starbucks in the same building.
I got a corner room next to the elevators on one of the highest floors. Fortunately, there was no noise from the elevators. The room was of decent size (standard by American standards but big by European standards) and equipped with everything necessary. The bed was fantastic. My bathroom was surprisingly small but I did not mind. Although the room was clean, I found some underwear in a piece of furniture. It was not a big thing for me however housekeeping staff should better try harder in future to avoid such situations. Another weak point of the room was that I missed some basic amenities as slippers or bathrobes.
There is an outdoor pool at the Sheraton New Orleans but no spa area. As it was surprisingly cold in mid November, I did not use the pool but it looked nice.
Without any doubt, there is some room for improvement at the Sheraton New Orleans. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my stay and would also return.
