The Omni Royal Orleans was just average. I have stayed at other Omni hotels before and this one was not up to the standard of what I was expecting. However, the room was very clean and equipped (albeit, small), so that was all we needed. This was my first trip to New Orleans, but my boyfriend has been here before and he said that compared to other hotels in town, this one was really nice. I’m sure this is true, so I’m taking his word for it.
Upon checking in, I didn’t pay attention to what room they gave me, but it turned out to be a smoking room. It was not difficult to change rooms, but would’ve liked if they had asked me which room I preferred while I was checking in. It hadn’t occurred to me to ask ahead of time because usually other hotels ask me before I had a chance to tell them my preference. I would say the service here is average; nobody went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. This may be because I’m used to staying at Kimpton hotels, where they always greet you and ask how you are whenever you walk by an employee. However, I would have to say that the doorman at this Omni was great. He was always greeted us with smiles and was extremely nice and friendly. He, by himself, made me kick my rating up a notch. Otherwise, my stay at this hotel was just average. It was good enough for our trip because of its cleanliness and ideal location.
The hotel is right on St. Louis and Chartres. It is only a 5 minute walk to Bourbon street, and it is very close to the Cathedral, the French market, and about at 15 minute walk to Frenchman street (where I would say the bar scene is MUCH better than Bourbon – it has a more local feeling than the Bourbon tourist trap). It is also close to many good restaurants. It is right next to Napoleon’s Bar & Café, which I would highly recommend.
The hotel has a rooftop pool and deck that overlooks the city. It also offers free wi-fi if you’re a Select member (free to sign-up), but they actually charge you $10/day and you will have to get that waived at the counter upon check-out. As a select guest member, you also get a free bottled water delivered to your room when you check in, but I did not know this. I ended up drinking the water bottles they have offered in the room and it cost me $7 (ouch!). They have a business center that allows you to check-in and print your boarding passes at no cost, but if you want to print anything else, it is $6.95 for 15 minutes of online access and $0.40/per page. Their concierge is also very helpful in recommending restaurants.
It was a decent stay for our price, and I especially loved how it was so close to everything. My boyfriend said that it was probably better than anything else available in the area. However, if you’re expecting an OMNI experience, you will find that this hotel is only average.
