My fiance and I often go to New Orleans, and we have stayed at the Melrose Inn 3 times. We would stay again if the crime situation had not accelerated so much recently in the Marigny area, where the hotel is located.
A woman was held up coming out of Port of Call, and then run over by a car. A bar (Mimi's) was held up by 2 armed robbers and patrons were relieved of their valuables at gunpoint. A woman was shot to death in her home and her husband was shot 3 times.
We love New Orleans, and we will go back, but until the situation is stabilized in the Marigny, it is not worth it.
Also, with regards to this hotel... don't ever pay rack rate, or the rates quoted on the internet. It is not worth it. The deeply discounted rates in the summer are really what it's worth. I think this place used to be very nice, but you can tell by the lack of care with things that that was some time ago. Also, on their website, you can see that they received some awards, but this was many years ago.
If you are in New Orleans I would recommend booking something in the middle of the French Quarter, and even then being very careful about where you walk at night.
As I said, we both love New Orleans dearly, and hope this is a passing phase.

We found a great rate on bookit for a deluxe room, and gave the mansion a call to see if they would match the rate. We were told that they only had a master suite or a standard room available. The master suite was too expensive so we settled on the standard for $79. When we arrived, we were told that the standard room was no longer available, so were were being upgraded to the master suite, yet we were still given the $79 rate. The master suite, called the Rivers Suite, was located a block down the road in a separate building from the main mansion. The room was HUGE and featured an enormous marble bathroom with a big jacuzzi tub and separate shower. I paid over $400 for a similar room at Le Pavillon. I couldn't believe I had this room for $79 on a Saturday night. We have stayed here twice and both times it has been exceptional. Can't wait to go back to the Rivers Suite... hopefully we can get the same rate again!

As a local here to New Orleans, we have many places to choose from for a quick
weekend getaway. But everytime we decided to stay at the Melrose. The Melrose is very relaxing, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are always clean. Also we like the Melrose because of its location to the french quarter. In the future we will always be staying at the Melrose for our weekend retreats.

We had a pleasant stay at the Mansion when we stayed there while in town for a wedding. No real complaints at all and the staff was helpful and friendly overall. After we left the hotel and we were in the airport, we realized we had left a very cherished 17 year old teddy bear in the room. We called the hotel and were assured by 2 people that they checked the room and the bear was not there (before the cleaning service went through).

Later in the week I was told the bear was seen and they would find out where it was that day. After many calls were not returned, we gave it one more chance (a few days later), and found out that the bear was thrown away by the cleaning staff. The blame was put on a lack of communication with the cleaning staff... perhaps they should institute a lost and found... or simply tell the cleaners not to throw out any personal effects.

Though it was foolish not to double check the room for our belongings before leaving, it seems unjust not to be given the proper customer service as soon as our bags were out the door.

My husband and I stayed here to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary. Half of the things in the room did not work (ie. whirlpool tub, lights in shower). The breakfast was not as indicated on the website. We were served storebought muffins and coffee out of a mug with no sugar or cream offered. The staff was rude upon arrival. The room was not cleaned for us prior to arrival. Parking was stated to be available, but no one told us of the fees for parking beforehand. It was an aweful experience and a poor excuse for a bed and breakfast. My husband and I are from New Orleans and we would not recommend this to anyone, including locals. I wish we would have read the reviews beforehand, because most of the reviews voice the same complaints.
