“NOT at All what we expected!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

We were very impressed by description and photos, however our actual experience left ALOT to be desired!! I paid more for this room than any Ever and it was NOT that Great!! The balcony was much smaller that represented and not maintained and dirty!
The door/window to said balcony would Not stay open! Termites visited nightly in the bathroom that the faucet was loose on the vanity! We had to ask for toilet paper when we Ran Out! I could Go on and on about the lack of Guest Service and it Is Not a bed and Breakfast!! No breakfast, coffee, tea granola, grapes and store bought yucky muffins!!
Eric was GREAT!! Thank goodness he recommended "Port of Call" across the street, has Awesome burgers and baked potatoes!! Buffa's also across the street has a Wonderful Sunday brunch with a Jazz Band 10:30am-2:00pm. Get the Eggs benedict and $3.00 mimosas or $4.00 bloody Mary's!

Room Tip: Pick another Bed and Breakfast!

This venue is a beautifully renovated and well-maintained mansion on Esplanade Avenue located the "quiet" edge of the French Quarter. Our one-bedroom suite included a fully-equipped kitchen with breakfast bar and full size appliances, washer and dryer, spacious living area, incredible tub (large enough for two) and shower combo, comfortable bed with wonderful linens and best of all -- a small balcony for evening cocktails and early morning coffee. Our suite was perfectly clean - not a speck of dust anywhere including on the dark hardwood floor! Staff were wonderful -- courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. Beautiful property in a great location.

This is an old mansion converted into a hotel. It was our second stay and will not be the last. It is a stopover from our home to our son's.

We always have the car loaded with household equipment as well as our clothes and amenities. They have you park in a gated drive for less than the downtown hotels.

We have stayed in two different rooms and both are large, comfortable and simply charming. There is a large clean pool and ample seats and tables to enjoy the weather.

Every member of the staff has been extremely helpful and personable.

The continental breakfast leaves a lot to be desired, but you can walk a couple of blocks to get beignets.

Not sure what all the positive feedback is based on, or perhaps we are spoiled from previous stays at much more reasonably priced and MUCH MUCH more well kept, hospitable accommodations. We booked the 'Grade Balcony' as it was described as being luxurious and the BEST. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Maria and the bellman Eric (who sadly doesn't typically work this property.) Based on Eric alone, I might consider trying his place of work, the Royal Hotel as he was, without a doubt the most delightful, helpful, hospitable employee we encountered. Aside from that, the staff is very happy sitting behind their desk very much NOT a part of the goings on in the establishment. That is of coarse aside from the constant dusting of fans and shelves, accompanied by ladders and staff blocking the stairwell and our room throughout the WEEKEND that we were there. Perhaps dusting of fans should occur during the slower parts of the week?

The 'Grande Balcony' was extremely expensive and extremely disappointing. Broken furniture, and 'Black Out drapes' which may have been sewn by myself in disrepair... which blacked out nothing from the DOORLESS bathroom that lacked much cover from the sunlight at all. Did I mention the bathroom had no DOOR.... I digress. The balcony required brute human strength to get open and onto. The bed was fine enough to sleep in and the room was a nice place to adjourn from the day.

Although technically IN the French Quarter, this description is stretching a bit. It's a hike to get most anywhere. We had to ask for more toilet paper. We were not resupplied toiletries or coffee for the in room coffeemaker. We asked for a taxi and were told it was not necessary as the distance to our destination wasn't that far. Breakfast is a non affair: muffins and pastries. As for elderly or visitors with issues walking steep stairwells, this might be a issue and should be addressed prior to booking.

Plusses:
+ It really is a beautiful place. Too bad the staff could care less how they are perceived by their clientele (aside from Eric, of coarse!)
+ There's a convenience store located within a block.
+ Port of Call on the corner. May not look like much from the outside but watch for the lines, best burgers and baked potatoes (thanks again to Eric for the recommendation.) That's for another review though.
+Sunday Brunch in Buffa's Backroom (just across the street!) Another review for this as well.

I would NEVER suggest staying here. What a disappointment.

Room Tip: Make sure if booking and if you have health issues relating to climbing stairs that you enquire abou...

I booked this hotel because I didn't want something in the middle of the French Quarter and I also wanted a real southern atmosphere.
The building is gorgeous in a pleasant avenue just minutes from the French Quarter.
The rooms are very spacious and the people are friendly and always available to help you!
The only concern is about stairs. If you are traveling with lot of heavy baggage be aware that there are no elevators there.

A beautiful converted mansion very convenient to the French Quarter completely modernized and furnished with a mod décor!!! From the moment you walk in the door the staff greets you and treats you as if you were royalty! The rooms are spacious and comfortable and there are great places to eat nearby. I can't say enough good things about Melrose Mansion, except that I can't wait to book my next trip there!
