“Not perfect but still good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

When I arrived at the Hotel Royal it was well before the check in time. Staff was great and allowed me to upgrade my room from a deluxe to deluxe with a balcony. The cost was minimal and a great choice with the weather being in the high 70's and low 80's. I was also able to get parking secured at an affordable $26 per day. It can be much more at other hotels and at parking garages. The hotel is old but has been renovated. There is no elevator to help the 3 or 4 floors. There are a lot of steps. The building is cut up and you really have a maze to get to your room. Being in shape, I had no issue with accessing my 3rd floor room. I could see where a larger person would have issues with the distance and also climbing he multiple of stairs. There was lot and up and down with doors that were double that took maneuvering to open. I did not ask for assistance but I think the staff would have helped. The room looked awesome when walking in. Very white and modern. I like that with the historic contrast. The floors were very historic but loud. I felt bad wearing shoes. If I can hear it, others can too. The noise was an issue. You will hear other guests and the outside noise. It is the French Quarter. Despite the noise, the room was small. It was contrasted with white and greys and beige. 2 nice art pieces between the small tv. The bed was very comfortable and had very nice linens that were laundered each day. There was room for a chest of drawers but it had none. There was a large chair that I used for storing my clothes. There was a small closet but I did not use it...just my suitcase. Balcony was shared but nice. High up and gave a great view of the city! OK....the bathroom. It was detailed perfectly. There was marble every where and the mirror was all of the wall. Excellent lighting...best I have seen in a hotel. Shower was great. Perfect water heat and the water pressure was excellent. However, if you are an oversized person, you will not fit into this nice bathroom. I had to shut both of the French doors to sit on the toilet. When I got out of the shower, I had to shut one door, step in front of the sink, shut the door back. I was ok with it and I think the staff would not put customers into that situation if they were larger? The location of the hotel is great. I think if you are staying in the quarter, this is the best area. You will always hear noise and it may wake you up. But, you sometimes get great views and great times which make your trip. Overall, this was a nice, cute hotel. Better than a Marriott.

Room Tip: There are a lot of stairs. If you cannot handle that, ask for a first floor room.

The perfect old fashioned atmosphere : old ( but good condition) , quiet location ( but not far from any kind of action) excellent service, and the rigth price. This hotel is located in a very chic area. I can't wait to go back.

As mentioned by numerous other reviewers the main plus for this hotel is location, right in the heart of the French Quarter and easy walking distance to most attractions.

The rooms in the hotel are very basic as previously described but generally comfortable. On our last night the temperature dropped significantly and as the rooms don't have double glazing the room was very cold to the point we could not wait until morning to leave the room.

Also as there is no lifts and a lot of wooden stairs it can get very noisy especially with high heeled revelers returning from Bourbon Street.

Location, location, location...the best part of this hotel is the location. We stayed two nights. Lots of stairs being it has no elevator. Stairs are very slippery when wet. No chair in the room no coffee maker. We did have a little friend the last day huge cockroach. I give this hotel Two stars for service and location.

We were there over Halloween and our suite was over a bar, not associated with the hotel. We had unbelievable noise until 8am Saturday morning. Complaining did no good. I even told the desk they should tell customers that your room is over a bar and you will not get any sleep. Was told that this was an unfortunate incident. Asked for compensation and was told that wasn't possible. Won't stay there again at Halloween.

This hotel is okay. The rooms vary a great deal. Mine was large, a Superior, but was lacking in amenities. There are no shelves, either in the room itself or in the bathroom. Simple things like a list of cable TV channels or good light in the bathroom would help a lot. The location is great, as is the bed.

The biggest plus for this hotel is the staff. They go way beyond what is required. They do the usual things like restaurant recommendations and holding bags for arrival before check-in, all very nice. However, when my iPhone crashed and I was stranded without a phone, they spent a lot of time and energy helping me overcome what seemed like an insurmountable problem. This was a group effort headed by Joani but assisted by Kendall and Neil. Other staff not involved in the phone problem but worth a special mention are Eric and Justin. They all make the Hotel Royal a special place.

I have stayed here several times over the last year and love it. Great location in the heart of the Quarter. Good rooms with comfortable beds with crisp sheets and very nice bathrooms. The rooms vary greatly in size and furnishings. Some rooms are quite small. Many rooms are only accessible by climbing lots of stairs. If you are on a budget then I suggest the Deluxe Rooms that overlook the courtyard. If price is less of a consideration, then go for the second floor Royal Balcony Suites, a fantastic large room with huge windows opening onto the balcony overlooking Royal Street. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms overlooking the courtyard, or splurge on the Royal Balcony Suite.
