“Wonderful New Orleans atmosphere in the Lower Garden District”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2011

We stayed one night in the Urania room on the third floor of the main house. It was beautiful. The owners welcomed us to their home and gave us a tour of the grounds when we arrived. It was a great place to stay before our honeymoon cruise.

This is the only place I stay on my once or twice a year business trips to New Orleans. As always, my stay was great. The location is just far enough away from the French Quarter to avoid the throngs of tourists, but close enough to get there in just a few minutes (my meetings were at one of the downtown hotels). The location on Magazine Street means you're in one of the hipper neighborhoods in New Orleans - great restaurants, trendy shops, etc. I drove down and brought my road bike. Owner Rachel Ruth is a cyclist and gave me a great route from the B&B that took me through some cool neighborhoods and then on to the Mississippi River bike trail (on the levy) which is great.

This time I stayed in the Calliope Room in the pink house. Nice and quiet with a view of the courtyard. The bed was great and the bathroom extra large. The antique furnishings were really nice as well.

Breakfast, as always, was a treat - especially the fresh granola and the rosemary bread!

A nice plus is the large parking lot next to the B&B. There is never a problem with parking. Also,Mojo's Coffee House is right next door and their coffee is always good - plus they serve really good cake.

Dined up the road at a Mano's. If you're looking for a nice Italian place, you'll be very pleased. There's good gelato up the road on Magazine Street. Ask Brett or Rachel for their recommendations.

Stayed at the McKendrick-Breaux House for a conference at the Convention Center. Enjoyed the location in the lower garden district. Stayed in the Erato room and it was lovely. The breakfasts were great, and Brett and family were extremely hospitable. I would definitely stay here again.

the owners are a nice young couple who really take care of you: you almost share a house with them, make a terrific breakfast and open to answer all your questions.
The old house has been redone in nice style , with cosy and spacious rooms in the main building. The separate building in the garden is somewhat less well kept.
The city center is on walking distance (20 min.) and the convention centre at 15 minutes walking. Away from the tourists and less expensive , just outside the center.

The Mckendrick-Breaux House is a beautiful Civil War era brick home that has been very nicely maintained. Brett Ruth does a great job making his guests feel at home in his home. The breakfasts were great, and Brett is always entertaining, polite, and full of good ideas and recommendations for activities, transportation, and restaurants. I and my two grown daughters had a wonderful time at the B&B, and at the New Orleans Jazzfest. I can highly recommend this B&B and I will certainly be coming back.

We just finished up our stay at M-B last Sunday after 3-nights there w/our kids (and their SO's) who came from other parts of the country for JazzFest. It was our kids first time in NOLA and this was the perfect place to stay for so many reasons.

First of all, Brett & Rachel are the warmest, most informative hosts that I have ever stayed w/in all of the years that my husband and I have stayed at B & B's and small Inns. Brett prepares incredible breakfasts w/minutes-old breads from the neighborhood (might as well mention it now, Mojo, the coffeehouse on the corner is a great place to start the day). The scones that Rachel made were downright addictive too.

The rooms are beautiful--we stayed in Melpomene which has beautiful antiques, high-ceilings, a lovely bathroom and the nicest bedding (and a great mattress) that I have ever seen in a B-B. Our kids stayed in Euterpe and Thalia; both were pleased, although we did have a matter w/a clogged toilet and one of the kids had a sluggish A/C in their room that got Brett's attention quickly and both issues were resolved the same day.

Adding to the charm of the house, there is a garden courtyard w/a porch swing where the 6 of us would meet, have a beer before heading out for dinner and cool off at the end of a day.

If you are considering staying at M-B House--you need to really ask yourself if you are a B & B person or prefer the hotel experience. We loved their two adorable kids Riley & Tyler -- who would pop their heads in the dining room at breakfast time or would be drawing with chalk on one of the walkways. That was definitely part of the charm for me. This house feels like a home and with that, homes sometimes have issues so it did not take away from our experience. Part of what we love about New Orleans (it was our 6th JazzFest spread over 9 years) is the "flow" of the city--not letting the little things get in the way of the incredible music, food (don't miss Dante's and Cochon--our best meals while there) and beautiful architecture. So, if you are flexible, love a homey vibe and have a thing for yearbooks (like Brett does) dating back to the late 1800's, this is your place. We will definitely be back.

Between the idyllic gardens, the rambling historic rooms and the delicious gourmet breakfasts, you can't go wrong with this bed and breakfast. The location on Magazine Street is a great place to stroll and check out the antique shops and galleries, an easy walk or cab ride from many of New Orleans' best attractions and music venues, and mere blocks from a grassy, tree-filled park. Each room in the sprawling old house has its own name and distinct decor, and the porch is off a little garden that's home to a friendly, attention-seeking turtle. If you're looking for a b and b with character, super cool proprietors, and great food, this is it!
