“Lovely hotel ruined by staffs' can't do attitude”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

This hotel is in the perfect location - right in the heart of the French Quarter, but on a quiet street out of the madness. The rooms are spacious, the decor modern, the balconies lovely - we paid extra to guarantee we got one as we didn't know if we'd be lucky enough to come back.
The breakfast was paltry at best - but there are so many great cafes on your doorstep, that's not a major problem.
What ruined this hotel and would stop us coming back was the seriously lacklustre staff. No request was acted on - no matter how small - from asking for a trash can to be put in our room, to asking the front desk to call us a cab to the airport (the girl on reception decided finishing a call to her friend was far more important than us getting our flight and when the "driver" did arrive - late - he decided to go inside and chat to the staff for 10 mins while we were left sweating in the car, worrying we wouldn't make it to the airport on time).
Oh, and every morning we were woken at hideous o'clock by the loudest refuse van in the known world.
The extra charges other reviewers have mentioned would have been acceptable, had the service been up to scratch. But it wasn't. And it left a bad taste in our mouths on what was otherwise the trip of a lifetime. We'll definitely go back to New Orleans. Hotel St Helene? No chance unless there's a major attitude change.

Called the hotel on the way - apparently my GPS was plugged with the wrong street name. Guest services guy (Allen) walked me right through how to get to the hotel and got the street name corrected. Check in was seamless. The room was on the 3rd floor. No elevator for this location for those who might have issues - ask for a ground floor room. The balcony room I was placed in the first 2 nights had plenty of space, it was minimalist with regard to decor with a large flat screen television. Great view of the streets from both directions on the balcony. There was no heat as the hotel is set up to heat all the rooms or none (or something of the sort). Not much need for heaters in the deep south (same concept applies in Seattle with regard to air conditioning). I did mention it was a little drafty and they supplied me with a space heater for the first room and the room I stayed in the last night (took no time to heat the room). That room was a court yard room which was nice also. It had a step up area with a sofa and coffee tables/end tables. Even better than the first night room - it had a balcony which one could view down to the pool. Staff was knowledgeable about the surrounding areas and picking out places for one to try out with regard to pubs, bars, and great tasting eateries. Wifi in both rooms was great - no issues with speed. Rooms were clean and it took a few minutes for the water to heat up in the 3rd floor room's shower - but it was great. This place certainly has a great location - one/two streets over and you're on famous Bourbon street. There was some noise outside of the city view room but that was the case with the entire French Quarter as there were renovations and constructions ongoing through parts of the city. Only thing to be ware is with Parking! Park at the parking lot beside the hotel or more wise is the parking garage BESIDE the Omni Hotel parking garage. Parking at the second garage was $10/$15 per night while the Omni parking garage was a whopping $36.
Great stay; enjoyed the conversations with the guest services folks.

Room Tip: The hotel staff gave great guidance on where was good to park. Once parked - I chose to stay parked...

We booked this hotel on Travelocity while driving to New Orleans. They did not have our reservation yet so we went and parked the car. By the time we were back they had us all sorted.

The attendant was very nice and gave us a bunch of dining ideas.

Our room was on the third floor, no elevator. We did score a space at the front of the building with a balcony and it was fun to sit outside and watch the activity on the streets.

Our bed was comfortable. There is a pedestal sink and mirror for getting ready, not a lot of space.

No coffee in the room but they have breakfast available downstairs in the AM.

Very noisy in the morning around 5 am when the trash trucks show up. Bring earplugs.

Parking is expensive. About 35 bucks per night unless you can get into the cheaper garage, which we couldn't. I think it was $20.

Central Location was awesome. Easy walk to anything in the FQ.

We were here for 3 nights. The first night it was freezing but by the next day they had that well under control and we were very comfy. I was disappointed there was no bath and the shower pressure was very weak...which is funny cause the toilet water pressure was great...whoosh!!!
We had a balcony that was a great size and it was fun to be able to have the doors open when it was warm enough. The room was small but beautiful with the dark wood floor and the super comfy bed. The staff was great....they were friendly and helpful and accomodating...we just loved them and we felt very at home. It was a perfect location...everything we wanted to do or see was just right there and walking the quarter we could stop and run up to our room if we wanted. The only negative was the hotel/parking garage across the street would get there huge metal garbage cans emptied by a truck every morning at 3:45. It was an ungodly noise that went on for what seemed like half an hour. Personally if I owned the St. Helene, I would seriously look into legal action with that hotel, but then I'm from California where they sue you for breathing. Still, I think this hotel is a lovely little gem and the staff is incredibly helpful and deserves a raise.

Room Tip: Perhaps an off the street room because of the garbage truck noise

This type of Hotel was a first for us...and we loved it! Had a Balcony Suite which looked out to the St. Louis Cathedral... 1 1/2 blocks away. It was Feb 4-8th, so we knew it could be noisy...but it wasn't too bad. It was just awesome being "in" the French Quarter.

The room was clean and not too small, and the price was good. But we must say, the clerks and employees there were incredible. Friendly and courteous, being oh so sincere. The bathroom has a nice size marble enclosed shower (no tub). There are two long doors that open onto the Balcony...with a table and chairs..perfect for people-watching and enjoying the beautiful views and weather

Parking was right across the street, but expect to pay at least $20 (went to $40 for Mardi Gras on that Thursday) for overnight. One of the best parts, close parking, and walking distance to all the best places...French Market Restaurant, Cafe du Monde (Decatur St), Jackson Square, the Riverfront...and on and on.

If you're looking for a quaint "real" French Quarter Hotel...this is a jewel. Hope this helped.

Room Tip: Balcony Suite is cool, but can be noisy facing the street (if you're game).

We stayed in New Orleans for 4 nights at this hotel. The French Quarter itself is very compact and accessible and this hotel was situated perfectly. We had a room facing the courtyard and it was quite peaceful and quiet at night. Our first night there, the heat was not working, so it was damn freezing in our room. This was fixed the next day.

There is no amenities to this hotel other than the pool in the courtyard. This worked well as it forces you to explore the French Quarter for breakfasts, meals and drinks. For us, it was perfect. Oh and there is no elevator! We were on the third floor, so we were able to work off all the gumbo we were eating.

The hotel staff is friendly and accommodating. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the courtyard.

General M, Manager at Hotel St. Helene, responded to this review, January 24, 2013
Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your kind remarks in regards to your recent stay at Hotel Ste. Helene. It is our goal to provide every guest with exceptional customer service, and clean comfortable surroundings that fit the needs of modern travelers.

We do apologize about the issues with the heating on your first night, and any inconvenience this may have caused. The boiler was immediately repaired, and is running at 100%.

Hotel Ste. Helene is perfectly situated in the French Quarter, with easy access to the hundreds of restaurants located within mere blocks. Guests can enjoy our hidden courtyard with crystal clear pool, as well as our comfortable guest suites. Hotel Ste. Helene does not feature a restaurant or bar, like most cookie-cutter hotels do. However, the historic charm behind our brick walls, spacious guest suites with modern design and ebony stained hardwood floors, and outstanding customer service, are some of the many reasons guests choose to stay with us on their trips to New Orleans so they can truly experience the beauty of this original historic building in the heart of the French Quarter.

Thank you again so very much for your kind words. We can’t wait to have you as our guest again, on your next trip to the Big Easy!
