“Had a great time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

I stayed here with my boyfriend and my two friends. We had a great time here. I think what people need to understand about this place is it is a privately owned and run B&B. It is not a chain hotel and there will be differences! I love to stay at places like this that are kind of off the map, and I thought it was great and had a lot of charm. Beatriz (the owner) was very proactive with our reservation and making sure we were accomodated.

My boyfriend and I had a room with a queen bed which was nice. The bathroom was a little small, but we liked it. My two friends had a room with a king bed, and they had a much bigger bathroom than us! I liked their room too! We had no problems getting to where we wanted to go in New Orlean from this location. The only issue at the time we stayed was that the St. Charles streetcar was not running. But the B&B has no control over this.

Breakfast was really good. There is a big common breakfast area that was nice. As far as parking, we were able to park in the gated area. We had no problems opening and closing the gate (as I have seen some people complain about). It is a little hard to find the property from the street, but Beatriz explained this to us and what to look for before we arrived. So we had no problem finding the place. We also felt that we were in a safe location. Some areas in New Orleans can be a little shady, but where the B&B is seems nice. It was a somewhat residential location which was nice too.

Yes, it is an old property and it may not be for everyone. But my boyfriend, friends, and I loved it. It was perfect for our weekend trip and I have no complaints.

Stayed at the House for the French Quarter Festival in 2012. Quiet location with easy access to the Trolley. Good restaurants readily available. Breakfast was more than adequate. Will be staying once again for the Festival in 2013.

Bottom Line Up Front: a reasonably-priced inn, but a little run-down and in need of some maintenance (broken furniture, stained carpet, rotting wood, etc.). Secure off-street parking is a major plus.

Location: on the edge of the Garden District. Quiet enough (when it's not Mardi Gras). Walking distance to shopping and restaurants on Magazine Street, 2 blocks from the St Charles streetcar (which will take you to the edge of--but not into--the French Quarter;$1.25 pp), 3 blocks from New Orleans Cooking Experience. City park 1/2 block away on Terpsichore.

Room: #4 was OK but plain. The doors on all the rooms on this hallway are hollow-core, so sound travels between the hallway and the rooms unimpeded. Furniture was assorted flea market. The mattress was very firm, and the pillows were thin. The bathroom was comfortably large but water pressure in the shower was basically zero. Unless the rooms in the other building(s) are more sumptuous, this is not a good choice for a romantic getaway.

Breakfast: pleasant continental breakfast--bread/rolls/muffins, some cereal, maybe cheese, mixed fruit, etc.

Glad to know you found us reasonable and enjoyed the free off-street parking. We have changed the dresser and side tables in the room since you were here. Those items were broken and we took longer than expected to find new ones. I can assure you the sleigh bed and the armoire in the room are not cheap or from any flea maket. The mattress in this room is firm, but not rock hard. The pillows have been changed, they were flat.

Our location is in the Lower Garden District. Even the suburbs of New Orleans are not quiet during Mardi Gras. I believe our guests respect each other here even during such a busy and fun time. It seems the water pressure is ok now, I do not know specifically what the problem was, but we are trying to check it more often to be sure it all continues to work well.

As you mentioned, we are close to the St. Charles Streetcar, which drops you off on Canal Street and the Quarter is across the street. Quite convenient. The park behind us is Coliseum Square,

Our breakfast actually consists of bagels, english muffins, bread, coffee cake, 2 types of cold cereals, oatmeal, plain yoghurt, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee, assorted teas, jams, buttter, cream cheese and peanut butter.

The Fairchild is a good price, secure accommodations for New Orleans. The three of us had a very spacious room. The car was locked in the parking area, and we had a key to get into the gate for the houses. The breakfast was very good and served in a spacious room. The location is a block from the St Charles streetcar. The only 'downside' for our trip was the street car was not working several days because of Mardi Gras celebrations (also a block away from the B&B :)). Because of the location, we were easily able to walk back to the B&B from the French Quarter. The family owners were available during breakfast for conversation, tips, any help we needed. A good choice for New Orleans.

Yes, during Mardi Gras you have to walk a little more. With the parades rolling down St. Charles Avenue the streetcars are not able to run during those times.
So glad you had a good time. Thanks for taking the time to review the B&B.

The Fairchild is really three different houses next door to each other. We stayed in the king balcony suite for the weekend. It was a great view and very large room. However, there were the little thing that was very diminishing. First the paint cracking off the wall. There is no door to the balcony so you have to use one of the three huge windows. It's easy enough to fit through, but the window in the parlor doesn't open correctly nor does it stay open. The parlor chairs are unsteady and tiny which makes for sitting longer than 20mins a real challenge. The balcony has "dollar store plastic lawn funiture" which should never be on the property, much less the first thing you see as you drive up to the Fairchild. Beatriz runs the place and is great with advice and tips for around the city. This makes for great breakfast chat. Overall it's a great place, but the little things hurts its overall feel. Simple fixes would really help this be a great place.

Thanks for your review. We appreciate your thoughts. I believe we have made and are currently making other changes to improve the look and the comfort of the suite.

We have fixed the cracks and painted the room. The plastic chairs have been replaced with some wicker chairs. There is no way around getting out onto the balconies. You do have to go through 2 out of the 3 the windows. The windows raise about halfway up and you do have to duck to go through it. We did not see an issue with it not staying open.

I am sorry you found the parlor chairs uncomfortable. They are little chairs. We are actually building a day bed in the parlor and hopefully that will be more comfy seating.

For the money, you will get a room and a parking space at a 170+ year old building behind a wrought iron fence, a delicious breakfast and conversation (as you choose) with the family owners of the place, a place to sleep, a place to shower, and nod off to the sounds of a TV and air conditioner at the end of the night. You can take a leisurely stroll down to the French Quarter and see everything it has to offer. You can stay closer to the house and enjoy the restaurants and nightlife on St. Charles. There are two beautiful boulevard-parks on surrounding streets that you can wander around as well. I recommend it. I'll gladly go back.

Overall we had a good experience at the Fairchild. I appreciated the free and secured parking lot, it was very convenient. The room was clean and plenty large. There was even a little kitchenette which was great. I found the bed to be rather hard but my friends thought it was fine and I am rather picky when it comes to beds. Beatriz and her mother were very nice, and breakfast each morning was very good. Unfortunately the St Charles streetcar is not running that far so we had to take taxis everywhere but that is not their fault. The only negatives were there were a few stains on the bed sheets, water stains on the walls, very low water pressure in the shower (which Beatriz said she was looking into) and the door to the building was never locked. While we could lock our room door, the building door was never locked even at 1am. But I never felt unsafe because the property is surrounded by a locked gate. Overall it was a good experience and a good value for the money.

So glad you had a good stay. Some of our sheets got stains from bleach, but we have now replaced them . All sheets are nice and new! We seemed to have some water pressure with some rooms, but it look like it is all ok now. Also, one of the doors that did not lock automatically now has a key pad code to come in. This seems to work well for us.
Thanks for the review.
