We'd been going to the French Market Restaurant since we started making a yearly trip to N'awlins back in the 90's. This was where I discovered my love of raw oysters on the half shell. Every year we'd start our trip with a spicy bloody mary and a dozen raw oysters on the balcony overlooking Decatur Street. Our yearly trips ended in 2000 (we started exploring other cities) so when we made plans for this trip we knew one of our first stops had to be the French Market Restaurant.
The balcony is still wonderful and the spicy bloody marys are still delicious, but the oysters were not all we'd hoped they'd be. First of all they were presented on a big metal platter like a baking pan for a pizza and they varied dramatically in size. A couple were enormous, maybe four were "regular" sized and the rest were embarrassingly small. We also had to spit out little flakes of shell several times. We had oysters every day on this trip and everywhere else they were enormous and beautifully presented. This was a big disappointment.
The rest of the meal was alright. We had the fried seafood platter. It was an enormous pile of fried oysters, shrimp, catfish, frog legs and crab on top of a piece of toast and lots of french fries and hush puppies and it also came with a side of coleslaw. There was plenty to eat for two people. I enjoyed everything but the crab. There some odd spice that struck a wrong note for me. And it would have been nice if the coleslaw were served cold and crispy instead of room temperature and kind of flat.
The service was excellent, and overall it wasn't a -bad- dining experience ... but I would go elsewhere if the main event were raw oysters on the half shell.
