My wife and I had checked online for inexpensive hotels to stay, and found the website, we thought why not. Next thing you know we had made the reservation which was only 50 dollars to hold the room, very inexpensive. The website explained everything. When we got there, it was in a bit of a dismal part of town, that may have been the only drawback to the place, the manager was very nice, polite and welcoming, we did have to share a kitchen and a bathroom, but both were never occupied, though that week, we were the only other guests there aside from a married couple and a nice middle aged woman. The hospitality was overwelming, we felt very at home. although the A/C was count op, we were never without them. It was walking distance to the French Quarter, not even 20 minutes. Very secure, one key for the room itself which had its own fridge and tv by the way, and one for the front door. Right next to a trolly car line heading in and out of town, it was on the bus route which was very conveniant for myself. All in all, we both loved the place and highly recommend it.

  • Liked — Very quiet
  • Disliked — Coint op A/C
  • Tips/Secrets: — Bring plenty of quarters

I came for a library conference and needed to be close to the French Quarter and the Convention Center. The Canal Street Trolley lines and the city busses ran right by the front door and only take about 5 minutes for a trip to the Quarter, so I used them most of the time (days and early evenings). When I used a taxi late one night the cost was a reasonable $5 from Bourbon Street.
The cost savings staying here as opposed to the conference hotels was a real bonus!
Friendly is an understatement. Hosts Sam and Kathey are great people!
This is a guest-house, with private rooms, some with private baths and some shared (your choice of course). Bedding is provided but bring your own towels. Laundry is available on site in the community kitchen.
All this is to say: it's like a home away from home for the traveller with an interest in something a little bit out of the ordinary in the heart of New Orleans.
Enjoy!

I just returned from a one week stay at the 1930 Canal Street Guesthouse during JazzFest. The website ((-)bestguesthouse(-)) accurately described and depicted everything perfectly. We had a great time in room 6, which was spacious and comfortable. Taking advantage of the kitchen, barbeque and Internet (all FREE) made our stay even more enjoyable (and economical). Mr. Sam and Mrs. Kathy were fantastic hosts, and it was nice to meet other guests on the patio for drinks and conversation. The Canal St. streetcar stops RIGHT in front of the Guesthouse, and in a few short minutes you are at the French Quarter.

While New Orleans is still recovering from Katrina, the Guesthouse is in perfect order and the French Quarter is thriving.

I had a fantastic time there and on my next trip to New Orleans I will not stay anywhere but the Canal Street Guesthouse!

A charming, incredibly economical place to stay. Each room is wonderfully different. The lounge enables one to have internet access, break bread with other interesting guests, do a load of laundry. Sam and Kathy are always happy to guide one anywhere, every recommendation has been invaluable. My family & I look forward to our next stay there.

Stayed here last April and I still have many fond memories. I was a lone female traveler so I was a little wary but my worries were immediately put to rest - I was informed very clearly what places to avoid and always felt safe no matter what time of day or night. The owners are wonderfully accommodating and helpful people! I was there for a month and they gave me a key to let myself in and out of the side yard so I could park my bicycle there. The streetcar stopped right in front of the Guesthouse - very convenient! This is a quirky, cool old building but very well maintained and very clean! Unfortunately, I had to spend my last 2 nights in New Orleans elsewhere b/c the Guesthouse books quickly for Jazzfest. My new home was in stark contrast (a supposedly more upscale B&B...) and highway robbery for what they charged me! I would stay at the Guesthouse again in a heartbeat (even now post-Katrina) and hope to return in 2007 for JazzFest.
