“Not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

Beef stew with spinach and fufu was good, spicy. Marinated chicken was very very dry, fried plaintains were good, chicken with brown gravy & peanuts wasn't peanutty at all, too goopy, and was bad. Coconut rice had no coconut taste at all, was rice and mixed vegetables.

“nice to be there---but nicer to leave”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

The waiter is very friendly, has a bit of trouble coping with so many people visiting his restaurant, but all the same he deserves no blame.

The portions are huge. I ordered something veggie, and the flavour is interesting; but the ingredients, well, they are just western veggies from the freezer on a base of rice or couscous. A strong home-cooked meal feel, indeed, but the taste of my home-cooking is better, the ingredients are higher quality, and the feeling afterwards is more rewarding.

“Good quality, home-cooked meal feel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

I had no idea what to expect when friends wanted to try this place. I ordered a chicken dish with baked chicken, rice, spinach, and a roll. It was tasty and reminded me of home-cooking from my mom. The portions were large, the food was cooked well, and the prices were affordable. If I end up here again, I will be a little more adventurous with my choices.

“Overpriced, overrated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

Bennachin is small neighborhood restaurant serving African-flavored dishes - which makes it different, indeed, from most of the local, creole restaurants in the French Quarter. Still, we doubt if it's worth a visit. The portions are generous and the place is cozy, yet the food is less than mediocre. We felt that we were eating beans from the can, bun from yesterday, and tomato sauce right from the paste jar. For this, we could as well go to the supermarket.

“Great flavors and hefty portions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2012

This African restaurant sits on the edge of the French Quarter and is worth the walk. It serves a variety of African dishes, this ain't your typical Ethiopian place. Start off with one of their house made ginger or jamaica drinks. The mashed casaba is quite good and there's more than enough for a table. The black eyed pea fritters are also very tasty. I got the okra, black-eyed pea, and tomato stew with coconut rice and fried plantains. Durward got a similar dish with Spinach instead of the stew. We left stuffed to the brim with a doggy bag to boot.

This is a great restaurant to learn how African food influenced Southern cuisine.
