Server introduces self & recites specials, leaves table, I call him back to place drink order. After 10 minutes server returns & announces out of champagne selection, five minutes later he returns, announces out of second selection. Place food order which includes instructions "no garlic". Five minutes an amuse-bouche placed in front of us which was a mushroom/garlic bomb --- too late -- we have already swallowed.. The manager's comment was we should have said no garlic in the original formulation, otherwise they take "no garlic" to mean no additional garlic. Yeah, like everyone knows that order protocol!
Server did not quarterback this meal. Runner delivered wife's appetizer to me & mine to her. Wife had ordered crawfish but shrimp arrived. She should have stayed with shrimp because the crawfish was obliterated by thyme overload.
Restaurant even botched the comp. Server delivered check with 80% comp of the dinner. A nice touch since we had not asked for a meal price reduction. He returns with my credit card and a revised bill with the comp reduced to 50%. What's up with that? I tipped 20% on that & didn't ask about the comp being changed.
Side note:the music throughout our stay was akin to Andrews Sisters boogie woogie bugle boy sound/rhythm. Inappropriate for this restaurant.
During our five day Louisiana trip we had meals at Bourbon House (New Orleans)
Lilette (New Orleans), Maison Lacour (Baton Rouge), Cafe Des Amis (Breaux Bridge), Prejeans (Lafayette), Blue Dog (Lafayette), Fezos (Scott) .... all way better than Palace Cafe.
If you go to Bourbon House ask for Mark. He is a terrific server. Cafe Des Amis is the place if you want to stuff yourself on a wide range of really good dishes; server Evan was excellent, he is headed for USAF in the fall.
