We dined here on Sunday evening, the last evening of the FQF. We called around noon for 8:30 reservations and were quickly accommodated.
When we arrived we were greeted by the chef/owner, Duke, a very pleasant and affable man. He was gregarious and charming. The waitstaff was knowledgeable of the menu and specials and eager to answer questions and make recommendations. The wine list was better than average, yet several selections, including our first choice, were not available. Our second choice was excellent.
My boyfriend ordered the portobello mushroom for a first course, and the spaghetti bolognese for dinner. I ordered the canelloni for the first course, and the filet mignon, rare, for dinner. The mushroom was excellent. You could taste the balsamic just enough to compliment the earthiness of the mushroom. It was cooked perfectly. The canelloni, also wonderful with a filling of pork and beef was a bit of a surprise. Just one for 14 dollars seems a bit steep, even for seasoned New Yorkers. I admit, for 14 dollars, I did expect two. Price aside, the flavour was rich while the texture was light. A wonderful combination.
The bolognese sauce was prepared with skill and attention to detail. The vegetables were visible yet gentle enough to not be distracting. The pasta was cooked to perfection. My filet arrived quite more than the rare it was ordered as. It was much closer to the medium well side of the scale. It was returned to the kitchen and another filet was delivered, by the line chef who apologized profusely. This one was prepared exactly as ordered, with a cool pink center and a crispy exterior.
We ordered one dessert to share, and also a brandy. During dessert, the manager approached us, apologized for the delay during our meal and asked if there was anything he could do for us, such as after dinner drinks. Clearly, we already had our after dinner drinks, so we thanked him, never the less. In my opinion, rather than make the offer, he simply should have comped the dessert and drink, alerting us to this. I'm also in the hospitality industry and that is how I would have handled it.
Overall, the staff was pleasant and professional. The food was wonderful; with excellent presentation. The portion size, while appropriate from a healthy eating viewpoint, was a bit small for the amount of money charged, in my New York experience and opinion.
