My wife and I first visited Stella! the summer of 2011 when we were first dating. The meal became one of the most memorable that we had ever had and we were anxiously looking forward to going back. Unfortunately, we were left disappointed and with a tarnished image after our most recent visit.
Our first surprise came in the form of sticker shock when we realized that our only dining options were either 4 course meal ($85 per person) or a 7 course meal ($125 per person). I inquired about a more customary a la carte menu, but was told that was discontinued about a year ago. My wife and I were not intending on such an indulgent meal and also struggled to find options on the 4 course that we liked. In the end, I did enjoy 3 of my four choices (deviled egg with caviar, asian bbq shrimp (excellent!), swordfish and bananas foster french toast (also excellent, but could have been warmer)), but unexpectedly being forced to choose all four left a bad taste.
The second drawback was that I did not find our services to be up to par with the level of fine dining. Our waitress was pleasant, but not overly friendly or attentive. In the end we had a better interaction with the other server in the room who was not assigned to our table. In a city like New Orleans, where there is plenty of competition, poor service is unacceptable.
Despite preserving our fantastic first experience with Stella! I think that my wife and I will continue searching for our favorite restaurant in NOLA.
