“Doesn't listen well......”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

Diners BEWARE: Our group made advance reservations at Stella! because it was close to our hotel and we were a group of women. Our reservations were early (6PM, the only time available several days in advance) on the day of our arrival, and upon seeing the prix fixe menu we asked if there were any options, having eaten at another famous NO restuarant for brunch and not wishing to over-indulge. We were six women....with an additional 3 seated at another table...and were were told that we had a choice of two prix fixe menus...period.

We ordered from that menu and were served some items we might not have tried before; most were well received.

We did not choose the wine pairings, but 8 of 9 ordered wine or other available bar options as well as menu options. We were not a "cheap" group. When the check arrived,it was for all six of us (the 3 seated next to us received a "group" check as well)....with the 20% added service charge included. When we 6 asked that it be divided it took 15+ minutes.....we'd figured it out by ourselves 'way before that!!

Several other members of our group had not made reservations ahead of time and came in at 7 PM. After at least one member of that group expressed an interest at a more moderate menu (less food) ; it was made available.

Heads ups......you need to know that other options can be available......our group just wasn't demanding enough....such a shame that it apparently takes more than a respectful request.

The remainder of our 3 day visit was delightful.....just this one sour note!

“Excellent, but bit stifled”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

Very unique food creations, this place is best left to true foodies to enjoy. They have moved to a prix fixe structure which seems to work well, but be prepared to spend a fortune (there are several very expensive 'upgrades' available; I got the wagyu beef and was underwhelmed at best).
Service was attentive and professional, not very 'friendly'.
I would not go back. I think for these prices one is better off at most restaurants in California and New York.

“Down to earth wait staff, food a little "out there"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

If you are familiar with an amuse bouche and don't mind paying at least $100.00 per person for a meal this is the place for you. A lot of fan fare from the staff when serving, a menu that takes the waiter a full five minutes to explain, and food that is good but sparse! Food was imaginative but far from the best meal I have ever had. There is the option to order a wine pairing with each course, we opted for a cocktail before dinner instead so I can't comment on the wine selections that would accompany each course. Overall, food was good, but not memorable, I felt it was vastly overpriced, and my guess is that very few local residents dine here. The wait staff will make you feel very comfortable. The overall experience was "eh" - bottom line, take your money and go somewhere else.

“Outstanding dinning experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We celebrated our 45th anniversary at Stella! We had the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairing. Both my wife and I thought that it equaled Thomas Kellers French Laundry. The meal was excellent. We look forward to returning again.

“World Class Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We are spoiled in living in the Bay Area with amazing restaurants. So, in order for me to write a review about food in another city, the bar is already set very high. Stella! exceeded my expectations on all fronts. First class service, food and wonderful atmosphere. I noticed that other reviewers thought the food pricing was expensive, but relative to San Francisco or New York, the prices were reasonable in my view and in line with the quality and creativity you expect out of a restaurant like this.
