We were visiting New Orleans for the first time, and we were interested in trying out one of the older, established restaurants. We read where Antoine's has changed hands and is not as good as it once was, and that Brennan's also had new owners and has suffered the same fate. But Arnaud's seemed to be a good choice--and it was. That said, we were still a bit disappointed. My asparagus was thick and a bit past its prime (it comes doused with hollandaise--which I hate--unless you specify otherwise, which I did. The heralded potato puffs were good, but they were just over-glorified fried potatoes. Our filets were tasty, but not melt-in-your-mouth awesome. The filets are topped with bearnaise sauce. Now, I am not a fan of bearnaise sauce either and requested that mine not have any--which was honored. But my hubby loves bearnaise sauce--and he said it was very mediocre at best. This was a bad surprise for him. (Note--this is a French restaurant and they sauce everything unless you tell them not to!) Our dessert was delicious.
The staff was very attentive. The ambience is antiques and wood, but red-and-white stripped entryway is a bit jarring
All in all, we weren't sorry we went--we'd give it a B or B+. But were were expecting much more considering its reputation--and the price. We still recommend it--after all, it is an worthy old-time NOLA standard. But will we go back? No. We've been there, done that. (GWFins across the street is a different story. Best place in NOLA. We would go back there in a heartbeat!)
