How to describe a restaurant with such a mix of great food, fabulous location, overbearing and omnipresent staff, and inflexible customer service? Some people will clearly enjoy the amount of formal attention that the copious staff provides. I was impressed with how unnecessary, distracting, and vaguely disapproving it felt. We were introduced to 4 staff prior to even ordering our meal. Leaving our table to visit the ladies room, I suddenly found the host at my elbow, persistently squiring me almost the entire way to the bathroom, which is saying something. When, midway there, I jokingly asked him if he was the bathroom escort, he intoned "you may call me whatever you wish" with an undertaker's humor. Was it my attire? Well, in my dressy dress, we passed a table of rather happy women loudly celebrating a birthday in cutoffs and micro tops - perhaps he was protecting me from the commoners? When I returned, my napkin had been transformed into a.... bird? fetchingly displayed on the table. Want to just slip away to the powder room? Not here! I watched, fascinated and somewhat alarmed, as the staff circulated around the room, extravagantly transforming napkins wherever they lay with a practiced series of rapid flourishes, creating an unwitting audience out of dining companions left waiting at the table. Mere half-glasses of wine accompanied by a tiny half-pichet naturally required additional intrusive attention to refresh the glass. While the food was quite good (rich, very very rich!) the cost did seem to be the price paid for just too many doggone staff popping up unbidden all too often. It was like bringing Dad to the prom, or a formally attired NSA lurking at the table. This does not make for romantic dining. Finally, our request to substitute a dessert from the prix fix menu - just asking to pay the extra for it - was met with incredulity bordering on disdain, followed by a check with the head waiter, and then "no!" All that staff, so little customer service, but at least we were properly put in our place, which is, naturally, priceless.
