Patrons are also welcome to order from our full wine list including 30 Wines by the Glass.Gumbo Shop is located at 630 St. Peters Street, 1/2 block from Jackson Square in the French Quarter. As the name implies, gumbo is a fixture on the menu, but our menu also features Creole and Cajun inspired dishes that represent New Orleans' truly unique cuisine. Gumbo Shop was founded in 1948 in a former French Quarter home built in the late 1700's. The building represents a typical French Quarter layout with central courtyard and former kitchen in the rear. For the past 20 consecutive years, Gumbo Shop has received the "Best of New Orleans" best place to eat gumbo from Gambit, a local publication that relies on reader polls to determine the winners in all categories.

“Consistently good, reasonably priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

This was my second trip to The Gumbo Shop, and it did not disappoint. I had the sausage/andouille gumbo and it was great. My husband was slightly disappointed with the seafood gumbo as it didn't have much seafood in it (we had better seafood gumbo elsewhere on our trip). We shared the red beans and rice entree and it was excellent! Perfect spice, great sausage, yum yum yum! Our waitress was extremely polite and responsive - fantastic service. I'll stop again next time I'm in NOLA and will likely just go for the red beans and rice.

Thanks for coming back to see us! We're so glad to hear that your Andouille gumbo hit the spot, but we're sorry to learn of your husband's disappointment. His bowl should have been packed with seafood, and we're sorry that we weren't able to get him a fresh one while you all were visiting. Still, we're thrilled that you felt at home, and that you'd love to stop by again—we'd love to have you! Until then, thanks for the fantastic feedback.

All the best,

“Love this place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

I eat here at least one time, usually twice, every time I am in NO. The red beans and rice are the best around, and the boudin is awesome. The bread pudding is just like my mom makes. The service is top shelf and the drinks are always mixed perfectly.

Thanks for making a point to see us during your trips to NOLA! Between our Red Beans and Rice, Bread Pudding and stellar drinks, it sounds like you've had a blast with us. If you have any further feedback, we'd love to know what we can do to earn that extra star. Until then, thanks for your review. We'll see you next time you're in town!

“Not fancy place but good fare and service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

Went back to Gumbo Shop with 2 business associates when in NOLA last month. I went to this place 12 years ago with my wife and I had good memory of nice meals so I hoped this was still the great place I remember to have simple but excellent food! There was a line when we arrived since they don't take reservation (and it's always a good sign anyway to see a line in front of a restaurant). Thanks to excellent management of the tables, the wait to get a table for 3 was reasonable: around 20 min. Our table was in the main room (they have a patio too). Our waiter was prompt, efficient and funny. He took very good care of us during the whole meal! We ordered a round of Ambita Amber and for appetizers we ordered crawfish remoulade and chicken andouille gumbo which were pretty good. Then we went for the Creole combo platter, blackened fish and sautéed shrimp po-boy which came in perfect portions and at the right temperature. We really enjoyed these entrées too. For dessert we had the hot bread pudding (delicious) and the praline sundae (tasty too). So overall good and reasonably priced Cajun food. As indicated the place is nothing fancy (more bistro or brasserie style) but clean and service is excellent. Will go back next time in NOLA!

We've always felt that the simple dishes had the biggest potential for greatness—the combination of all those fresh flavors allows for a world of possibility! We're delighted to hear that we were able to serve you the same great meal that you remembered. Thank you for the wonderful review, Sam. We hope the gap between your next visit is much shorter!

“Good Gumbo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

The Gumbo Shop offers newcomers to New Orleans an array of Gumbo choices as well as the traditional New Orleans meals. We had the Gumbo and the Jambalaya. Both were very good. Not excellent, but very good. As with many French Quarter eateries, expect to pay a little more than you would at the Uptown or West Bank places. Our server was wonderful. She was cheerful and professional. Make this your stop in the French Quarter.

Whether you're a tourist or a local, we're happy to serve up a great taste of New Orleans! It sounds like you had a good time with us, but we'd like to hear any further thoughts you may have regarding our Gumbo and Jambalaya. We're always looking to become even better, so let us know if you feel that there's anything we can do! Until then, thanks for your feedback, Glen. We hope to have you back next time you're in town.

“Bread Pudding was favorite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

Expect to wait in line. Gumbo and jambalaya were good (could have been spicier) but what stood out the most was the Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce...could not get enough!
