This Sucre sweet shop is located in a youth-oriented and trendy area along Magazine Street.
The store is clean and brightly lit, with seating inside and out.
We were told by one of the clerks behind the counter that the types of pastries offered changes periodically. The day we were there there were four offerings: eclairs, macaroons, brownies and cupcakes. They also serve a couple dozen flavors of ice cream and sorbet.
The eclairs, which are basically half a regular eclair with confectionaries on top, were artfully decorated and arranged in the case. The shop puts considerable effort into presentation, including the look of the clerks who were all fashionable les juene filles.
We selected two half-eclairs for a total of $13. We could have hoped that they were as tasty as they were pretty. But they were not. By my judgment they were considerably less satisfying than a less-expensive eclair from the Fresh Market grocery a few blocks away on St. Charles Avenue.
We rate Sucre a generous three stars based on looks and presentation. There's a lot of room for improvement in value.
