“Welcoming In Every Way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

Beginning with ease in making reservations, to flexibility with the breakfast menu, all the way to making us feel like family, La Belle Esplanade is the best place I've stayed in NOLA. I was one of four on a university roommates reunion trip, and somehow we lucked into this wonderful b&b. A friend, who is a NOLA native, was concerned about safety for women in this area, but we found it to be very safe. Matthew and Melanie are out-of-this-world hosts and the inn is quirky, interesting, and comfortable. Thanks Matthew and Melanie for your wonderful hospitality and excellent advice!

Room Tip: The stairs are beautiful - and steep - but there is a suite downstairs for anyone hesitant about the...

I sent you a postcard and it got returned. It's for the pictures you sent us from your trip and allowing us to put them on the blog. You ladies were wonderful and we'd love to have you back anytime. Another postcard is in the mail. Cheers, -M&M!

This is a very nice place to stay but the hosts make it great! The stairs would be quite difficult to anyone who has a disability/is out of shape and I love places with pools (which there is not one here), but those are the only down sides. I had a wonderful description of the surrounding area, a delicious breakfast, and a fantastic conversation with the owners. I would definitely suggest people stay here!

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms that have balconies are wonderful for people watching!

Like I said when you left, you're welcome back anytime. Our 1883 inn is not ADA compliant, as our website says, and anyone with any concerns should contact us beforehand. We do what we can to make every stay with us a relaxing adventure. It was a pleasure meeting you and learning about the important work you are doing for our communities. With a handshake, M&M

I almost don't want to write this for fear it becomes too popular and it is difficult to get a room when we come back and no doubt we will come back. Our friend chose the location as an attempt to situate us in a residential but also historic neighborhood away from the fray in "real New Orleans". What we got surpassed even storybook expectations. The neighborhood is just lovely, outside the quarter but in turn central to so much more of the city and the many neighborhoods that make it so unique. The property itself is a joy. Majestic ceilings, brilliant fun colors, and a museum of artifacts and framed histories to explore in the building itself. The common spaces and garden are welcoming but it is the rooms and the private terraces that win the day. The rooms are true suites with bedroom, sitting room, proper bathroom with tub and an entry hall. Windows abound and the private terraces complete the experience. Even in a town with this much to do we found ourselves lingering on our terrace every morning and every late afternoon. Each room has a theme and the antiques and the playful but authentic themes are a huge leap from typical B&B kitsch. Bed and linen very comfy and all mod cons including a fridge. The light in these rooms through the layers of curtains on the super tall windows is just magical. The hosts Matthew and Melanie are authentic and very present yet never intrusive. You never got that awkward feeling of being in someone's house but the comforting feeling of a good inn. The food is elegant and delicious and made with love and Matthew is a font of cultural and historic knowledge about the town. I really enjoyed the way he gets to know each guest and then suggests outings and activity that cater to what they seeking rather than his own favorites. And he seems to take such joy in that. The most peaceful, comforting, downright spoiling retreat I could imagine right in the city. Finally, the complimentary use of well maintained city bikes with a lock was transformative. This is a great bike town and the location is perfect for using bikes as transport. We rode off our ridiculous daily eating allowing us to see places like City Park and the Bywater we may never have really deeply explored otherwise. Bring lights if you plan on riding at night however and a helmet if you want one. They may provide them but I did not ask. As Matt said, we aren't a bike rental we are just letting you use our bikes.
Now if you are looking for a hotel right in the middle of the Quarter this is not it although you might still be quite surprised how much better this is. This is an older building but quiet with everything you might need even as a business traveller. Romantic as hell. Would probably be great for kids too. Bring a swank dressing robe, you will want it for lingering on your terrace in the mornings. Matthew, thanks so much for finding mine and getting it back to me.

Room Tip: We saw two back rooms both wonderful. The terraces in back were very peaceful. I imagine the front r...

Thanks for keeping the most important secrets to yourselves! We enjoyed the relaxed pace on which you went about each day and your attention to all the city's details. No one else has noticed the artists' treehouse down the street. Though you were here for longer than most guests, you acknowledged that you were never going to be able to see and do everything New Orleans has to offer, so you made the most of where you went, soaking it all in.

We don't provide helmets or lights for the bikes. We loan them at your own risk, the only rule is don't park them in the Quarter because that's where they get stolen. We can accommodate 10 guests but we don't have 10 bikes, please indicate an interest in advance. Also, no children under the age of 13. There is too much valuable non-standard B&B kitsch lying about.

Come back anytime. We'll make room. With a handshake, -M&M

This was a lovely B&B, but it was the hospitality of the owners that took it over the top. Not only were they friendly and accommodating, they had so much knowledge and information of New Orleans which helped us make great decisions on where to go and what to do and see. We just needed a few weeks with them instead of a few days!

*****Excellent Breakfast & Coffee

Room Tip: All of our rooms were great!

I've stayed in B&B's before, but I will have to say that staying at La Belle Esplanade was probably the most enjoyable time I've had at a B&B - due to the hospitality and pure "niceness" of the hosts, Matthew and Melanie. When we arrived our first night, Matthew encouraged us to walk up Esplanade and find a place to eat. Even at night, we could see the grandeur of the homes. It's a nice, quiet, residential street, in a great location. The place itself is lovely, every room and bedroom decorated with interesting pictures, pieces, and "stuff." Every item and picture has a story. When I go back - and I most definitely will go back - I want to take time to go into every room and look at the decorations and ask questions. I liked hearing the back stories of how and where they found the objects and paintings that are displayed throughout the house. It is such a charming place, with delightful hosts. The breakfasts were delicious - breads, cheeses, fruit, local pastries and dishes - reminding me of traditional breakfasts you find in European inns and B&B's. Matthew and Melanie were full of tips for places to see and things to do in NOLA. And each morning, they seemed to enjoy hearing our stories of what we had done and seen. They are the best of hosts. If you are looking for a nice place to stay in NOLA, lovely, comfortable, in a good location, and most of all - genuinely kind hosts - I strongly recommend La Belle Esplanade.

The inn, like New Orleans itself, is full of stories. We try to make it interesting to stay with us. We live here, so we've accumulated a lot of interesting details for all the rooms, and a lot of interesting stories as well. We're so glad that you found us. It was a genuine pleasure to have you stay with us and you're welcome to back any time. Good guests make good company. Don't be a stranger. With a handshake, -M&M

My wife and I were in New Orleans for the weekend visiting our son. We decided to stay at La Belle Esplanade instead of a hotel, and we are glad we did. La Belle was roomy, comfortable and charming. Our room was spacious. Great central location outside of the French Quarter and business district but close enough to make it convenient. Mathew and his wife were wonderful hosts and very informative. I would definitely recommend it and would stay there again. A real New Orleans experience. John L.

We're glad that you gallivanted about enough to get a good feel for the city that your son is going to call home for the next few years. It's a big city full of surprises and certainly enjoyed your share. Next time you're in town, you know where to find us. It was nice talking to a fellow Nutmegger at breakfast. Be well until we see you again. Cheers! -M&M.

We had a wonderful stay at the belle esplanade. We travelled from Scotland to celebrate my 30th, having toured quite a lot of the states, and we can both honestly say that this was easily our favourite accommodation. Matthew and Melanie were gracious and informative hosts throughout giving us valuable local knowledge during our six nights stay over Mardi gras. Breakfast was served in a welcoming dining area and each day guests and hosts swapped stories from the day before informing everyone of hidden gems to seek out. Every morning a local delicacy was also served, each one with a story on who produced the food, favourites included the maple and bacon donuts and the crawfish pie.

We stayed in the Clio suite which had a very big sitting room and a bedroom with a balcony looking out onto Esplanade Avenue. The rooms felt authentically New Orleans and were extremely comfortable. The house is walking distance from Frenchman street and is in a very friendly neighbourhood.

We would both highly recommend staying at this bed and breakfast as it surpassed our hopes and expectations. Don’t be tempted by a generic hotel, choose La Belle Esplanade and you will meet with two of the nicest hosts that you could hope for. 5 STARS

We predict this is one birthday you won't forget. Good memories are made in New Orleans. We were happy to share your adventures. You certainly made the most of your time here and really explored and got a good feel for the festivities. It's like magic here and we're glad you were able to drink in a big taste of it. Next time you're in the States, we hope you come back to our city. You have two friends here who will be happy to see you. Be well and laissez les bon temps rouler in Glasgow, too! Wherever you find yourselves! -M&M
