My husband and I booked a combination swamp and plantation tour on our honeymoon. The driver, Ceasar, picked us up from our hotel, took us out to see the sights, and dropped us back off at our hotel. We really enjoyed the convenience of not having to drive and were glad to pay a little more for the pickup service. Their prices, compared to other companies, were very reasonable.
Our first stop was the swamp. Cajun Pride owns their own swamp and they hand-raise many of the alligators on their land. The staff will rescue alligators who are in danger of being shot because of their location, and will re-located the gators to their land. Captain Al was very knowledgeable about the swamp, ecosystem and the gators. He fed them raw chicken and marshmallows! We also saw a friendly family of raccoons, who also eat marshmallows. It was a very hot day, and so we did not see the larger gators (they hide out in the mud to stay cool) but we saw a ton of smaller gators. At the end of the tour everyone got to hold a small 4 year old alligator, which was my favorite part of the trip.
Our next stop was to the Laura Plantation. The plantation tour was interesting and the main house was very pretty. It was very hot that day, and so we especially enjoyed the parts of the tour in the air conditioned house. The plantation also has some original slave cabins and some nice gardens.
On the combination tour you have a choice of Laura or Oak Alley plantations. I would recommend Laura--they tell you the story of the whole plantation and the family that built it. Oak Alley is very beautiful but I have heard that the tour is not as interesting.
My only complaint would be that there was no lunch stop. There was a small shop that sold cold sandwiches at the swamp and the Laura gift shop sold snack food, but there was no specific time set aside to eat. Either plan to buy a sandwich at the swamp or bring your own food to eat on the bus.
