“Time of your Life!!!!!”

First of all, you have to understand that alot of reviews one here are bogus. Competition will definitely write negative reviews. The India house staff are one of a kind! Carla, Shawn and Natalie and the rest of the staff are amazing. Its the best hostel in new orleans! open 24 hours, no restrictions, and you don't feel like your in a private residence, (like every other hostel in the east I've been in). Mark, ( the owner) is the most laid back guy you will ever meet, and the India house offers a life changing experience that other hostels cannot even compare to.

I stayed in the India House Hostel and learnt a lesson - dont pay for a week when you just arrive yu may not want to stay for longer than a day! I found the place dirty and the two bites I recieved from sitting on the sofa's just confirmed this for me. In the house there are TWO toilets with one shower in each for everyone in the house. Unless you washed straight after the cleaner in the mornings they were both always dirty. The rooms are grungy and not particulary clean. The furniture is way past it use by date. The fridges were smelly and jammed with food. The atmosphere is relaxed with staff constantly drinking even at breakfast time. There are americans living in the hostel and kind of take over the areas especially the tv 'area' hostels should be for travellers and not for long term residents. I noticed a number of rows and backbiting going on with this group re staff. The beds are SO uncomfortable with springs sticking into you as you sleep.
Would I stay here again, no. The location is straight across the road from the tram which is wonderful.

the air conditioning was nice, the private room was reasonably priced, and we had no problems. the bathrooms were grungy, but most hostels are like that. our window overlooked the backyard where everyone hung out at night drinking and having open-mike night, which was annoying, but normal for hostels.

I have read the reviews for this hostel and can tell you that it's certainly not for everyone...If you are looking to stay at a hotel, then please stay at a HOTEL to get fresh sheets, towels, mints, etc.... If you are like me and you just need a place to stay for your getaway this place is great, I usually stay at hotels and I only sleep and bathe in them. But at the hostel I actually crawled out of my shell, had dinner with fellow travelers, got in the pool by myself, and really enjoyed the atmosphere....something I NEVER do at hotels. The food was good and cheap, I am a small female and stayed in a room with 11 other sleeping, snoring men and never felt uncomfortable. Everyone was friendly and happy. My tips for fellow travelers: bring your own blanket if you want one, the hostel only provides sheets, also BRING TOWELS, they are not provided and cost $5 if you forget your towel. You may bring a lock for a locker if you want to make sure your valuables are not stolen, but I didn't really feel the need for this. Do this and come with an open mind ready to take in the eclectic beautiful mess that New Orleans in and you will enjoy yourself!

My husband and I stayed at India House to kick off a cross-country road trip. We love to hostel, and I have been wanting to stay at India House for years. India House is in an urban neighborhood which is low SES, but what do you expect near downtown in a southeastern city? The great location means you have to use big city thinking and big city safety rules. The staff was extremely friendly, and was instrumental in our having a good evening our one night in The Big Easy. We were given a map of the French Quarter which had a ton of information written down for us. Good restaurants, good streets to stroll down, bars, venues, bus stops, phone numbers for cab companies, and places to avoid. Our private double room was small, but had a ton of character! It was located in a small building next to a koi pond, and we were charmed. The AC in our room worked so well that I had to get a blanket during the night, a delicious luxury in the southern summer heat. I always wear earplugs when I sleep in a hostel, so I didn't notice a lot of noise. The next morning we got a ton of recommendations for breakfast, and were well-rested for our journey west. It was a great experience, and I hope to go back soon with a friend of mine who I think will love the place.

This place has a great atmosphere and a lot of character. It was ravaged by Katrina but has been beautifully restored, however there's not much around it. It feels warm and cozy, and there are a lot of friendly people, both staff and fellow travellers. They play good music, funky art, have a large, well equiped kitchen, cool outdoor area/pool/deck and everyone sits outside watching tv, chatting or playing cards, all whilst knocking back a few cold ones. Overall the whole place has a great vibe.

The rooms are basic, but clean and spacious. Although there are a lot of variety in room types. The location is decent - just a 15 min tram trip to downtown/Bourbon St and a $10 cab fare after the trams stop. The suburb its in is not great, but quiet and has plenty of parking. The only fault I would say are the bathrooms - they are old and kinda run down, but not too bad. The staff whilst busy, are friendly and helpful.

This place is worth staying at just for the atmosphere and the chance to meet similar minded, cool people. It is one of the few hostels that I've actually enjoyed and even preferred hanging out in, and can be more interesting than New Orleans itself. On top of that it's cheap, clean and in a good spot. At least try it for one night!!!

Stayed two weeks. Rms are cleaned occasionally. Dirty clothes are everywhere. The common areas are cleaner than the rooms. You cant breath in rooms. Storage for dirty clothes, cheesy shoes and insects attacking you. Its better to sleep outside and thats even worst.
Europeans dont believe in taking showers i think or they just have a very bad smell. Health Inspector please. Young springbreakers that are so desperate to get away from their parents and school to be wild, oftentimes get themselves in trouble. They keep the neighbourhood up. Where is the staff. I guess busy watching television or getting in trouble.
