“Fungus infected hell-hole”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2005

The India House Hostel is, by far, my worst hostel experience ever. I'm comparing it with more than 50 other hostels in Australia.
The rooms are smelly and dirty. All over the hostel, fungus is growing (and living well) on the walls and ceelings. You get greasy fingers if you touch anything in this hostel.
The staff is rude and won't help you with anything.
But if you want infections and have a litlle preview on what hell will be like, go and stay at India House Hostel.
If you go to New Orleans consider to spend some more money on a better place to live while you're in town.

This was my first time in a hostel- and I'm 36! I took my 18 year old daughter to New Orleans for the weekend and we decided to stay at the India House. It was all I was hoping for and more! Yes, it was spartan, and yes it was a little "scruffy" but what do you expect for $17 a night? I didn't notice any icky bugs (like othes have stated they had seen). We did have a blast on Saturday with Josh, Joe, Cameron, Chas, Ron Rico, Tony, and Brendon. We miss you guys! Email us! And Chas, I am planning to come to Camp Kiwi. I promise! If you want to have a party time, or even hang out in the tv room to chill, this is definitely the place to meet some really cool people!

You'll see many reviews bashing the India House Hostel, but remember first off that it is a hostel, not a luxury hotel, you have to expect to have bathrooms with wet floors and hair on the drain. Its also in New Orleans, where very little is clean. That being said, India House was exactly what I was planning for: a place to sleep and meet people. No it wasn't spotless, no hostel is, but it wasn't so bad that the average person would be grossed out. The sheets they provided were bright white and very clean, so that should be reassuring. The location wasn't bad, not too close that you have to deal with masses of drunks, but not too far to get anywhere. Everyone in the house was friendly and accommadating and VERY laid back (this means they're not going to yell at you for breaking something, but they might not be quick to fix it either). Quick tip, book directly through the hostel, very easy to do, and not through a middle-man website, or you'll be charged about 20% more, should only pay $15/night for a bed.

Good fun, place, and you'll leave with the great stories. Hopefully the guy at the desk when you arrive will also apologize for being "really drunk....and hungover"
