“Spacious downtown hotel but starting to show its age.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2009

The positives: An excellent downtown location for business travelers and just fine for leisure travel, just a 10-minute walk to the French Quarter and the Riverfront. A very pretty indoor pool and whirlpool. Spacious rooms (and you can't beat those 2BR suites when traveling with kids!).

The negatives: this is an older hotel that is starting to show its age. (Hotels must age fast in NOLA with all the partying and carousing!). A somewhat rough-looking surface lot across a side street from the main entrance, for $16/day (although we parked there without incident.)

Overall not a bad stay, might stay there again for the big suites.

I travel a lot for work and stayed at this hotel for several weeks. The front desk service is the absolute worst I have ever seen in a hotel. Please, send those kids on some hospitality training. I was afraid to ask them anything because they never knew or could never help.. or try to help. I got several pieces of mail and was never once notified that a piece had arrived... so it could sit for days or weeks without someone lifting a finger. I asked the front desk for extra hangers in June and I'm still waiting. My co-worker had his room charged to someone else's credit card for two weeks in a row, and the front desk still hasn't realized something went wrong. (He only noticed after he checked out and is contacting Hilton management about the error.)
On the flip side, however, I stayed as long as I did because of the better-than-expected breakfasts and dinners. Not magnificent, but pretty good for a complimentary service. I especially liked the assortment of fresh fruit with every meal. And unlike the front desk, the kitchen staff new about good service. Thank goodness.
The suites were spacious, the beds were comfortable. The electrical sockets didn't all work. The water was gone for an entire weekend and Monday morning while I was there. The building is not the newest or best maintained, but I wouldn't say it was dirty or falling apart. I do understand some previous comments about smokey non-smoking rooms because I've smelt smoke coming from non-smoking rooms several times. (7th floor is supposed to be the smoking floor.)
Other amenities: there is complimentary wireless (and wired) internet service, a computer room with 2 or 3 computers, a gym with 2 or 3 older treadmills and dumb bells, and a guest laundry room with 3 washers and 4 dryers.

I booked a non-smoking room (months and months in advance) and got a smoking room. The room really reeked and even the "Ozone Treatment' they did to the room did not help. There seemed to be a lot of people living at this hotel for a very extended amount of time. If I had it to do over, I would have booked at the Hampton Inn. It's a little closer to the French Quarter, right on the trolley line and has lots of stuff near it.

Homewood suites was a good choice. The staff was very friendly, location was
perfect for a family 10 mins. walk to the quarter and 15 to 20 min. walk to the river or
warehouse district. The breakfast and welcome home dinner was better than expected.
The pool was very nice and never crowded. A great way too get out of the heat. On the
down side the room we stayed in was a bit musty smelling and the carpet could use
some cleaning. Our feet or socks turned black while walking around the room.

Having stayed the previous night at the Homewood Suites in Houston the New Orleans hotel seemed old fashioned. The rooms feel dated and poorly laid out- long thin front room. Although we had asked for a non smoking room we could still smell the smoke. Bed is comfortable and the bathrooms are big.

We were told our floor had been made a Non Smoking floor a couple of months before but you could immediately smell the stale smoke as you opened the door. Asking for a change of room we were given another room on a different floor with exactly the same issue.

They did try to help by putting in an ionizer for the evening which helped.

The initial girl on checkin seemed more interested in her personal phone call than working with customers. Not a great start but apart from her all the other staff were friendly.

Breakfast was poor and very basic. We looked at it but ate out instead.

As with other reviews the parking seems odd but it is close to the hotel. Seems a shame not to include in the cost of the hotel but maybe alot of people come by air.

It is a 15 minute walk to the French Qtr and it you are looking for romantic do not stay here. It is a good, clean base which would make a good value for a family but as a couple there are definitely better hotels.

Lots of room in this hotel. Extensive breakfast, but it doesn't open until 7 on the week-ends. I have to be up and out before then. I had a few non-working items in my room, and I left a note with the front desk. When I returned that night, everything was fixed -even the shower curtain was replaced. I'd stay here more if I could get a good rate.

Homewood suites were clean comfortable and very accommodating. The rates were reasonable . The kitchen had a breakfast buffet every morning and every evening light buffet was available. People were wonderful and gave us suggestions of places to see. This was my first trip to New Orleans and will not be my last. It was great fun and I felt safe.
