We came to New Orleans to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday. She has always wanted to see New Orleans, and as an added advantage, because the Superbowl is coming here, the parades of Carnival began a little early.
Our stay is from Saturday 1/18 - Tuesday 1/22/13. As I'm writing this, it is Monday night, and we leave tomorrow.
The hotel is a fairly typical Homewood Suites. As a family, having a hotel room that includes a bedroom and a living room with a sofa bed, which allows our 17 year old son an opportunity to have privacy and his own TV, is always a plus. We found that the hotel was within walking distance to many of the local attractions, but cabs were also available for those with mobility challenges.
Upon entering the hotel on Saturday morning, after a long morning that began with a very early flight from NJ, we were pleased to see that the hotel lobby area was very clean, and the breakfast area actually quite a bit larger then most of the Homewoods we have stayed at.
While checking in the concierge, Kylie came over and introduced herself, and asked about our ttrip, and offered her assistance in any way that she could.
Tired, we went up to our room and made use of the shower, and took our time getting cleaned up. The room itself, was reasonably nice. A small full kitchen, including stove, microwave and fridge. The Living room with a nice flat screen TV for our son. And everything clean. The King bed in the bedroom was comfortable with nice bedding.
After freshining up, we met with Kylie for lunch/dinner recommendation. She gave us three choice recommendations, and marked them on the map. She also showed us on the map, where the parade for that evening could be viewed. As someone else mentioned, she also marked areas of the city we should avoid walking thru.
She arranged a bus tour of the city for us for Sunday morning.
That night we went and had dinner at Star Steak and Lobster on Decatur Street. This was wonderful. Afterwards we walked to a good location for viewing the parade.
On Sunday, we woke up and had to rush downstairs for our bus tour, as we overslept our alarms! We got there right at 8:30, and the tour guide was already there waiting for us, and talkling to Kylie. We joined the passengers from other hotels, and after a few other stops, our tour began. The tour was very informative, and went thru the 3 major areas of the city, with a stop at a City Park for a restroom and beignets. We also stopped for a cemetary walk.
Afterwards we got advice on a Sunday Brunch from Kylie, again, several options, and we chose The Palace Cafe. The decor was quite lovely, with live jazz being played, and the food was delicious.
For dinner that night, we took another of Kylie's suggestions, and ate at Oceana's on Bourbon St. I had the Praline Duck and it was great, my wife and son enjoyed their meals as well.
On Monday we did the WWII museum, which we did thru Kylie again, and I wish we had more time there. If we can get moving early enough tommorow we will be returning.
All in all, the hotel was very good. The only ding I would give is that the handle on the doors between the bedroom and the living room fell off at one point. And there is a missing handle on one of the drawers in our bedroom. Everyone we spoke with was excellent, and friendly. It's location is great. I don't know if the security in the area was at a high because of the upcoming superbowl, or if it was normal, but I never felt uncomfortable walking in the neighborhood even at night.
But Kylie the concierge was the most standout, friendly and helpful. She sent a small "birthday" bag of goodies up, with a nice note for my wife tonight as well.
