Just returned from a three day trip to New Orleans and two night stay at the Crowne Plaza Astor. My first disappointment was that they charged me about $30 a night for valet-only parking. I wish I had done my homework. I would have turned in the rental car before arriving and taken a shuttle back to the airport on my departure and saved a boatload. The front desk attendant was training another and was ambivalent at best—not very welcoming or friendly. The room was above Bourban Street and was fine…although for the price, I would expect a fridge and a microwave which there was neither. The second disappointment was that you only get 24 hours of free wifi. Seriously??? Don’t require me to sign up for reward points to get wifi….it’s 2013 and expected in nicer hotels. My 16 year old son tried to find bottled water at midnight and found vending machines on three different floors near ours that took only credit cards. He had cash. I got out of bed and went to the front desk where the attendant told me they had no water and to call room service. Okay, I had to go to two different floors to get two bottles of water from vending machines that took only credit cards. I’ve stayed in much cheaper hotels that provide one or two bottles of water gratis. The Marriott a few blocks over has a Starbucks in the lobby. I'll try that next time.
