I have been back to the Crowne Plaza for the fourth time in six months this week. My business brings me into the area and while it's a 30 minute commute to where I'm working, staying at the Crowne Plaza is worth the commute.
I first came for the location - I wanted to spend a night in the French Quarter - but have stayed the other three times because this is an excellent hotel.
The vallets Gerardo, John and Mario recognize me and greet me like a returning friend. The front desk clerks, especially Duane, are friendly and helpful. Miss Pam who runs the executive breakfast is as good as coffee to start the day. Paul the conceirge brings credit to an under-rated and often neglected profession.
The hotel is located right on the corner of the two iconic streets in New Orleans - Canal and Bourbon. The building is historic. If you're looking for steel and glass with modern decor, this is not the hotel for you.
The rooms are somewhat small and, if you get a room that faces Bourbon Street, somewhat noisey. This is all expected in a downtown hotel on the number one party street in the world.
Needless to say, there are tons of restaurants and sites within walking distance. The aquarium, WW II museum, butterfly museum, Canal Street, legendary shopping on Royal Street, the River Walk and the casino are all steps away.
The fitness facility is good with a selection of cardio, free weight and machines for all major muscle groups. The pool is too small for doing lengths and is meant more for lounging around.
The only downside for the hotel is that wifi is pay per day but there is a complimentary business center with internet connections.
I travel a lot for my work. I usually dread going to large cities because the hotels are like accommodation factories. The Crowne Plaza in the French Quarter is my favorite hotel in North America.
