We made arrangements for us and 3 friends to go to Jazz Fest this year and just before our trip found the terrible reviews of this hotel. We were terrified of what we - and our friends - were going to find!

We found the hotel to be wonderful! All of our 3 rooms were nice and clean and had windows and everything worked well. New Orleans has plenty of dingy hotels but this was not one of them. Maybe the rooms across the hall didn't have windows but all of ours were great.

One thing we agreed with from the unfavorable reviews was the bogus wi-fi charge. None of us used the service but we were all charged a daily fee for it. And I did hear someone say that it didn't work well.

But the location of this hotel to the French Quarter was ideal (just a block off Canal Street) and we discovered some new restaurants in the Warehouse district. One good one in the Quarter is EAT - at 900 Dumaine Street. You get great deals on non-fried food and it's BYOB! There's a small grocery with a huge wine selection one block away!

My wife was in town for a conference and the host hotel wanted $160/night. We found a great Web deal for $54/night plus the $6.50/night for Internet and fitness room. It's a block from the Quarter and right on the St. Charles trolly line. Yes, the rooms were small and a little on the dark side during the night. However, our room and bathroom was clean, the daily maid service was good as was the front desk when we needed something. Upon check in I requested a fridge and more hangers and had both within 30 minutes. Folks you can't expect 5 star accomodations for this price, but it was clean, safe and the service was fine. As with others, we spent little time in our room.

In all of the times that I've traveled, I've never experienced more incompetence than when I stayed at the Royal St. Charles. The "managers" gave our room away twice and suggested that four people share one bed. The rooms were also windowless, small, stained, and falling apart. Further, danishes and coffee do not equate a "full American breakfast." Although the location was great, the hotel experience was awful. Think twice before choosing this hotel.

this is a very inexpensive hotel. i came for a conference rate of $99 but i saw others checking in at $55 a night. it has a great internet/phone package (unlimited calls and internet for $6.95 a day). i found the staff to be helpful. don't expect anything from the rooms however. they are small and dark - mine did not have a window! when was the last time you had a room without a window. the bathroom was small. the linens were dingy. bed was comfortable enough. for the price i would stay again but this is not a boutique hotel as it claims.
