“Wonderful Cemetry”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

This cemetery is well worth taking the time to tour. We visited it as part of our bus tour. It is worth hearing all the stories surrounding the crypts. The photo opportunities are boundless.

One of the more interesting cemeteries we've seen

“Cemetery with history and breathtaking tombs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

Out of all the cemeteries that I toured in New Orleans, Metairie was the most breathtaking. There are so many unique and elaborate tombs here that express so many styles.
At Metairie you have governors, military, businessmen, musicians, actors, madams and so many others from all walks of life buried here.
The grounds are extremely well kept and ground crews were all around the cemetery on upkeep.
In both the more modern and older sections of the cemetery have tombs of interest. You can pick up a heritage trail map that highlights some of the tomb in the cemetery
You can do it in one day,but I had to return again to enjoy. I also enjoyed taking some great pictures during an afternoon rain.
If you are staying in the downtown area, a car is needed to visit. There is a streetcar stop that require a walk. On my second visit, I saw a small mini van tour bus. Otherwise mainly family visiting tombs and a few other tourist.
I was touring solo and never felt an issue with safety, esp with ground crews all around working.

“Must See”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

The history of the cemeteries in New Orleans is very interesting. We took Cajun City/Cemetery tours due to our limited time in New Orleans, and were taught the meaning of "getting the Shaft" origins from these cemeteries and their practices. Beautiful sculptures adorn the mausoleums, and the amount of dead is astonishing.

“Bring your camera!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

This was my second trip to this cemetery. My first trip was for the sole purpose of seeing " The Weeping Angel". I had first seen her on a commercial for the "Twilight" movie and knew that I had to see her in person. After seeing her I knew that I would return to the Metairie Cemetery again to share her with friends who would truly appreciate the beauty of this sculpture. This cemetery has sooo much to offer to the person who loves history and art. The magnificent sculptures and the intricate displays of craftsmanship and the attention given to these tombs and mausoleums will take your breath away. It is truly time well spent. Give yourself a couple of hours and wear comfortable shoes, and don't forget to bring your camera because you will have many opportunities take some great pictures that will be worth framing!

This was a beautiful old place, with unique design features and a garden-feel. It was worth the time to wander around and imagine times gone by.
