“Safe and very interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

There is an obelisk to mark the grave of Mrs. Moriarity engraved with "Faith, Hope, Charity" for Mrs. Moriarity (it rymes) Another sarcophigas is for Mr. Lacoste (another ryme) "Buck buck bucket he kicked the bucket old man Lacoste is dead bum bum". Little risk of offense as these memorials are very old. I drove by them growing up and sing the same to my kids now when we visit. My dad is buried here too. Parklike atmosphere with truly incredible statuary etc. A must see. This graveyard is safe unlike some in New Olreans.

“The best cemetary”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

Lakelawn Metarie is the best cemetary in NOLA. The monuments are huge and varied. It is well worth a cab or cable car ride.

“A Confederate final bivouack.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

At its outset, this was a cemetery built for wealthy New Orleanians. Following the Civil War it continued that use and was bolstered by most famous Confedrate officers who died in New Orleans being entombed there. John Bell Hood is there, Jefferson was first buried in a tomb still there before being moved to Richmond, the "Soldier Prince from Dixie" richard Taylor is buried there. A wonderful tomb to the Army of Tennesee with an equestrian statue of Albert Sydney Johnston which can be seen as you whiz by on the I-10. And a fabulous monument square to the Washington Artillery. And much more.

“Awesome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a HUGE cemetery!! It is just breath-taking to see the size of it. The buriels are all above ground because of the sea level. I would love to have days to walk through and look all of the dates. There's so many beautiful monuments.
