All the travel books basically tell you to walk Bourbon Street once and then find other places to spend your time. I guess it is like most places in that it is what YOU make of it. We found Bourbon Street a mix of Key West's Duval Street and Amsterdam. If the strip clubs bother you - walk past. If merchandise in windows offends - turn away. There is pretty much something for everyone.
I thought the end nearest to Canal Street was the seediest and the end furthest from Canal Street the nicest. We never once felt unsafe on Bourbon Street - even on New Year's Eve - though we didn't walk it past 9pm that evening.
We found people watching excellent here. Johnny White's Hole in the Wall Bar was fun, as was the surprising Pat O'Brien's. We would also recommend oysters at Dickie Brennan's Seafood on Bourbon. They were the best we had on our New Orleans trip and we went back every afternoon for our fix! Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo is a MUST. It had a unique collection of amulets, dolls, etc., and offered readings by appointment, too. Just past it is Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop and Bar, which was quite a change from the busy places towards Canal Street. It was dark and creepy, which was just perfect for the oldest bar in New Orleans!
Definitely walk Bourbon at least once on your New Orleans visit. You won't be sorry and you will probably find several places you will return to again and again.
