“The only place I'll stay in New Orleans!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2010

I stayed at the W Hotel (New Orleans) for Essence Music Festival. This was my second year staying at the hotel and from the moment I arrived, I felt like I was returning to my second home! The staff was very welcoming from the moment I pulled up, some even recognizing Me from last year. The staff was so friendly. My room was very comfortable and my "room stylist" did a great job of maintaining the room.

Good location. Within walking distance to French Quarter, riverboat tours and WW II Museum. Across from Harrah's if gambling is your thing. Lobby is,as others noted, hip and chic looking with a bar that is popular at night with the younger crowd .Concierge and desk staff were well trained - very professional. We booked a king room using SPG points and were assigned to a room on 18th floor. Room was clean and well prepared for our arrival. Comfortable feather enhanced bed, feather pillows. Electronics were an Ipod docking station, alarm clock, flat screen TV with ample channel selection. Bathroom had old bathtub/shower combo w/excellent shower pressure and good drainage. Small sink w/large counter. Bliss products.
Negatives- No coffee maker. No plugs at desk level for cell phone charger, laptop charger, etc. We had to crawl under the desk to plug things in. Speaking of the desk, the desk chair was entirely too low to be useful. Liquor miniatures were openly displayed at child height; should be locked up.
Overall, a good stay. Would use this hotel again if in NO.

I am not one to [--] about a lot of things, but when there are things that constantly go wrong, I have to draw the line... I wouldn't consider myself a world traveler, but have staying in hundreds of hotels throughout my lifetime and this is the first time I had such a bad experience on 1 trip. let me start things off this way:

The Good:

The W New Orleans lives up to it's counterparts with it's hip atmosphere in arriving to the hotel, it was posh and shiek and we were greeted very warmly by the doorman/porters. They were extremly friendly extremely helpful and kind. this was followed up by a warm smile from the Check-In Staff. All was looking good...

The bad:

We get to our room and it's a standard double which is what we ordered. As we venture in to the room further, we notice stains on the floor and Q-Tips lying on the floor, and not clean ones that we dropped, they were dirtly looking...We go into the bathroom and there are towels in the sink, not the towls that you use for your face, but a rag looking towel, like the kind they use to wipe down tables in restaurants. It is soaked and sitting right in the sink that we are supposed to brush our teeth and wash our face in. Hey look, I am not one of those types of people that nit pick everything, the Q-tips could have easily fell out when the maid was cleaning up, no harm no foul, but to leave a rag inside the sink smelling like mildew (must have been there for a while) this was unacceptable. We call downstairs to the front desk and kindly inform them of the issue and ask them to send someone up to clean this. Unfortunately, there is no one available to do so at this current time. Are you serious? You can't send someone up to clean up the room that should have been cleaned prior to us checking in? Ok, so they offered to switch rooms for us which sounded like a good idea, so we agreed and started to make our way down again, when they call back and say, "oops sorry, there are no more rooms", we answer back and say you just told us that you were going to switch us. "Yes sir, but now we have no more rooms, we can offer you a complimentry breakfast for the inconvenience" We agreed and went out on the town. No harm, no foul right? WRONG! The next morning, we are all getting ready to go out and whilst in the shower, the water completely stops working. Not in the begining or end of the shower, but smacked dab in the middle, shampoo in hair and soap all over body... Boom, no water... No sink water, no toilet water and no shower water to wash off all the soap. Are you serious? I call down to the front desk and am greeted by a short snobby, we are working on it. At this point I am frustrated not only from the night before, but now no shower water... I ask to speak to a manager, and am transferred to the "Manager" who says the engineers are workign on it and it should be back up shortly. No offer of anything for the inconvenience, no apology. Nothing. We are furious that a Hotel with such a great repuation can have such a lack of customer service and courtesy. We march downstairs and are met with snotty attitudes and another complimentary lunch offer, I mean while we appreciate the offer, is it too much to ask for a hotel that provides clean rooms and running water? Oh and I almost forgot to mention, that maid service is non existant unless you specifially request it... No new towels were placed in our room until we called down to the front desk to request it, there were also no card that some hotels offer to leave on the door requesting maid service and new towels. So we assumed that the rooms were cleaned daily, but not here...

Needless to say, the next time we are out in New Orleans, we will NOT be staying at the W on Poydras Street. It seems like they are asleep at the wheel here...

The W New Orleans has a wonderful staff who provided excellent service in addition to its great location just blocks from the French Quarter. Upon arrival at the hotel the valet staff eagerly assisted us with our bags. With check-in we were upgraded to a better suite without asking for it. The layout of the room was nice but was a bit cramped with not much walking space between the bed and the work desk and chair. The closet did not contain robes as did the rooms of our travel companions plus the room was a bit dusty. We really enjoyed the complimentary ride service in the Acura MDX. The ride service is only drop off service but still came in handy and was much better than taking a cab. The concierge service desk workers were extremely helpful with navigating the city. One couldn't ask for a better location with Harrah's casino across the street and blocks away from the Riverwalk, Convention Center, and French Quarter. We didn't eat or drink at the hotel since there are so many cheaper options in the French Quarter. I recommend the Praline Connection on Frenchmen Street for lunch and dinner at Olivier's on Decatur Street. And you can always find cheap drinks on Bourbon Street and live jazz at the Royal Sonesta Hotel also in Bourbon Street.

13 of us stayed for a weekend for a bachelorette party. The people who worked in this hotel were outstanding! So willing to help and making things happen when we needed it. I was very impressed and would definitely stay here again. Tony and Kevin were our favorite concierges! Thank you so much for contributing to our fantastic stay!

My husband and I spent two nights here before a cruise. Upon checking in, they argued with us over our priceline reservation. They wanted to charge it all on our card. We were happy to give the card for extra expenses, but not to charge the room, because we'd already paid for it. They also seemed to be training someone at the front desk, which doesn't seem to be a good idea at 10:30 at night on a Friday.

Our room was small but modern. The shower had absolutely no water pressure. Thisis clearly some older hotel they remodeled and slapped a "W" name on. I will say the common areas are very beautful and spacious.

They claimed there was a shuttle, but we were never able to use it. They also refused to take it out any time there was a parade, and it being mardi gras, that was most of the time! That was when you actually found someone who had heard of the shuttle. Half the employees acted as though you asked for a ride in a spaceship. The people at the front desk would let you wait there a bit, finish their private conversation, and then talk to you.

I was pretty disappointed, but then again, you're in New Orleans, how bad could it be?

The hotel was VERY nice and comfortable! The beds were all down feather...bedtop and comforter. The hotel was very clean! I am pretty picky about cleanliness too. Has a very nice gym, but small pool. To get to French Quarter and Bourbon street you have to walk maybe 5-10 minutes. Not too long!
