“Great location for the money.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

It was great as far as location was concerned. The staff was excellent, very helpfull. The people that stayed there were very friendly and helpfull in finding the good places to eat- mom and pop joints. The surrounding area looks a bit rough but there were no problems in going to and from the Quarter. It is an old hotel so all and all it matches the rest of New Orleans. The city has great history. Loved my stay.

Having left booking accommodation in New Orleans to the last moment and having an Airbnb possibility fall through the Empress was one of the only places within walking distance of the French Quarter with rooms within our budget. Even so we still paid over $70 per night which is well over the amount many other reviewers are reporting. We were however very heartened to see a rainbow flag flying from the balcony.
The positive points about this Hotel are:
- a sensational location - within walking distance of the French quarter, Louis Armstrong Park and fantastic cultural areas of interest within Treme if you want to go looking (we even walked down to City Park which was a bit further than expected but still okay for two old girls)
- 24 hour reception
- we always felt safe walking home from the French Quarter at night
- when the coffee was available in the morning it was really good
- wifi was free as well as fast and strong
- one particular staff member was incredibly friendly and helpful - she helped us with a range of things from finding a good hairdresser to show
- our room was kept clean
- taxi service was extremely prompt

The areas that could be improved are:
- the only public area for use of the wifi (it didn't work in our room) was on the upstairs balcony which was also the area where all the guests and staff used as their smoking area. It is also the area where people eat (there is a microwave on this balcony also) and get coffee in the mornings so it was pretty unpleasant as it seemed that EVERYONE smoked......endlessly.
- plastic mattress covers make the beds very uncomfortable as the sheets are placed directly on top of these.
- staff helpfulness and politeness was a hit and miss affair - as mentioned above there was one particular staff member who was a stand out and the rest ranged from outright hostile to mildly disinterested.
- while the rooms are kept clean they are very shabby with peeling paint on walls and ceiling, floorboards in the bathroom are clearly disintegrating as soft spots are evident under the vinyl covering, cigarette burns adorn the vinyl floor covering in the bathroom and the bathtub paint job from many, many years ago is peeling away bit by bit.
- TV picture was displaying in negative colours (Room 211)
- there is nowhere close to get breakfast or breakfast supplies (we did ask for directions but the staff member on duty that morning shrugged and couldn't tell us)

Having said all that we had a fantastic 7 days in NO and our experience of the immediate neighboured was a good one - locals we met while walking around we're very friendly, the houses were beautiful with,Amy in the process of being renovated and with Halloween approaching the decorations were fabulous.

Room Tip: If you get a room close to the front of the building the wifi is more likely to work in your room.

We could not even stay here because of the amount of prostitutes. When we arrived here, there were hookers in the parking lot and the hotel lobby. The receptionists would not touch anything without wearing surgical gloves which is disgusting. The kids were terrified to even get out of the car when we pulled up. When we got back to the car, there were x-rated adult things going on in the car next to us that nobody needed to see.
We could not get hold of the hotel manager for our entire stay in New Orleans. When you leave the hotel, you have to leave your key at the front desk which seems to be shady.
This hotel is located in an unsafe neighborhood. We were being yelled at constantly walking from the parking lot to the hotel. This is highly inappropriate and was not appreciated.
This hotel is one of the worst hotels I've ever pulled up to, let alone attempted to stay.

Room Tip: DO NOT STAY HERE! It is very unsafe all around.

The Empress Hotel has the least expensive room rates you will find in Downtown New Orleans. It is located just steps from the French Quarter in the Treme. The Treme is a neighborhood full of culture and history. The Treme is the birth place of jazz. The Hotel offers free parking for its guests, free parking is not offered at many places in Downtown New Orleans.
You can't beat the price of the Empress Hotel for the location it is in.

This is by far the cheapest hotel in downtown New Orleans, we paid less than $40 a night. Having said that you get what you pay for! The rooms are in pretty shabby condition, the best is the worst I have ever slept on (to be honest the floor would be better!), the shower would go from freezing to scalding, the TV is tiny and in a weird position almost up on the ceiling and there is no coffee making facilities in the room. The staff we pretty hit and miss, the first lady on reception was great, very polite and helpful, but another lady who worked there who I assume the manager was terrible! She was telling the staff off in front of us and was generally very rude. They have an odd list of rules which you have to agree to, such as wearing shoes and a T-shirt whilst in the hotel!

The location is great, it is right next to Louis Armstrong Park - right in the Treme and on the other side of the park is the French Quarter.

After saying all this I would probably stay again just for the price but if you can find somewhere a bit out of town and is on a good bus line or on a street car line for similar price then I would stay there.

Reservations were a nightmare as they make you sign and fax a form and kept losing my paperwork- finally got confirmation from Ms. Brooks two days before trip only to have them cancel my room because they charged my cc prior to arrival and it didn't go through- even though we stated clearly we would pay cash on arrival. Room was hot- air conditioner is a tiny window unit that didn't work- there was a hole in our ceiling, the bed was horrid and gross- it smelled- the tub and shower was cracking and full of mildew spots- no closet- one very uncomfortable metal chair in the room plus the TV kept turning off automatically. You have to leave your key at the desk when you leave the hotel and be buzzed back in but the front desk person was nowhere to be found at midnight and we had to wait almost 15 minutes. Then when you check out they make you wait so they can go strip the sheets on the bed and "inspect" the room before leaving. Cray, inconvenient business practices, horrible customer service, and disgusting rooms- worst hotel experience I have ever had. Online photos are VERY deceptive

LET ME SAY THIS FIRST: MY BF BOUGHT ME A GLASS MASQUERADE WITH NEW ORLEANS 2013 PAINTED ON IT AND SOME ONE STOLE IT OUT OF MY ROOM THE SECOND DAY WE WERE THERE I WAS SO UPSET I STILL CRY ABOUT IT. Me and My bf took our first trip to New Orleans thru July 1-6 and we were very upset with the room conditions. Had to leave the key before leaving couldnt leave the AC on when we left and the tv was so far up and small you couldnt see it not like they actually had real cable. There was tons of water roaches which freaked me out. all you could smell all night was POT (weed) and or cigarettes. it was so hot everyday that when we would get to our room it would be hot as an oven and the bed was too small for a 200lb woman (me) and 135lb man. the bathroom was nasty and the sheets were nasty. after finding out my mask was stolen i wrote a note saying stay out of my room that I PAID FOR FOR A WEEK we dont need sheets or towels and they still came in messing with my stuff. NOT A PLACE FOR CHILDREN. its cheap but not worth losing little items that actually mean alot more than they look.

Room Tip: .No room is worth staying in here

We are very sorry that you had such a negative experience. If we had known earlier about the missing mask we may have been able to address it. We have no tolerance for drug use at our hotel. If such is encountered please alert the clerk so they can escort the guilty party off of the premises. We have one double bed in every room...it states so on our reservation forms and on our booking sites. We also have available cots for extra guests; you only have to ask the clerk and they will accommodate. There should never be an issue with cleanliness at the hotel. We have housekeepers there every day whose job it is to handle that part. If there was a mistake we would have been happy to fix it. Please just let the clerk know what is the issue and they will accommodate you. Thank you.
